The Magnus Carlsen clip goes viral again and again – gave up stopping the sharing – news Sport – Sports news, results and broadcasting schedule

13-year-old Magnus Carlsen left the table, while former world champion Garri Kasparov was left sitting alone and wondering how things were going. The Norwegian super talent takes the time to look at the other games in the rapid chess tournament and calmly returns to the board when he hears that Kasparov finally makes a move. The clip of the historic event has remained standing as one of many proofs of Carlsen’s brilliance and talent, and is still going viral on the internet. Last week when Elon Musk discovered the video on the account Historic Vids on X. Musk, who is the head of X and one of the richest men in the world, contented himself with commenting with a flame emoji. At the time of writing, the clip has 15.5 million views and more than 115,000 likes. Watch the documentary here: WATCH THE DOCUMENTARY: Magnus Carlsen: The Prince of Chess. – Amused that Musk comments This is not the first time that Øyvind Von Doren Asbjørnsen has experienced that others are using clips from his documentary “The Prince of Chess” without permission. In the beginning he tried to keep control of it, but the task proved impossible. – Stopping the spread of the film was like cutting off the head of a troll, – if you cut off one head, only three new ones appeared. The clip has now been shared and shown millions of times on social media. That’s okay, because it’s a unique historical picture. I think it’s just fun that Elon Musk and many other famous personalities like and comment on the clip, he tells news. LUCKY HIT: The documentary “The Prince of Chess” was a great success for director, Øyvind Von Doren Asbjørnsen. Recently, clips from the documentary have been given a new life on the internet. Photo: PRIVAT – Why do you think the clip has become so popular? – There is something about the poor boy against the great master. Kasparov had a frightening personality and psyched out his opponents. So when 13-year-old Magnus plays against the seasoned world champion, you get the classic underdog story. This impressed young Carlsen the most. Russian Kasparov is a nobody in chess. When people discuss who is the best chess player in history, it is often Kasparov and Carlsen that is discussed. The situation was completely different in 2004, when they met for the first time. Kasparov had been world champion between 1985–2000 and was the highest ranked player in history (2851 rating points) at that time. LEGEND MEETING: Magnus Carlsen, aged 13, has since passed Kasparov as the highest-ranked chess player in history. Photo: NTB Von Doren Asbjørnsen was therefore amazed at how collected and focused the wood prodigy was in meeting the legend. – He would very much like to play against Kasparov, who was the greatest chess player in history. So I was very impressed that Magnus was able to keep a cool head and play as well as Kasparov. It was a great experience to witness something so historic and not least to be able to capture it on film, says the Ålesund native. Old coach, Simen Agdestein, told VG that time that the 13-year-old had the giant completely in his knees, but had to state that the winner was running out of time. In the next game there was a loss. Chess commentator, Torstein Bae, highlights the victory-hungry determination as the most striking thing about Carlsen. – It is very rare that Kasparov meets children in a real duel in a serious tournament. Most people would sit like an aspen leaf and shake with nervousness when they get the chance against the king of chess. Magnus, on the other hand, has the self-confidence to be able to manage a draw and be clearly annoyed when he loses in the end, says Bae. ROLE SWITCH: Kasparov (left) himself was used to being the prodigy who challenged the established elite. In the showdown against Carlsen, the roles were reversed, and he sat a little nervous about being the grown-up loser. Photo: Rob Taggart / AP After the game, Carlsen regretfully told himself that he played like a child. Not being satisfied with good enough, but constantly looking for victory, Bae believes may be the key to Carlsen’s success. – Others are satisfied with a good result and playing a draw against the best, but it is not enough to become the very best. Audmjuka by Carlsen Rettane for the documentaries was sold to TV channels around the world, thus there has been a few kroner to earn for the filmmaker. – What fascinated you the most in the meeting with Carlsen? – It was that he was so dedicated, and not least his memory and creativity. It came so easily and naturally to him, he says. And tell about when he was lucky enough to get a match against the future world champion during the filming. – He thought it was boring to sit and wait, so he asked me if we could have a party. I said there was no point, you’re going to beat me anyway. – Then he says that he can play without the springers. Then I thought that now I will put the boy in his place. But he made it an off-road advantage not to have springers, and in the end beat me fairly easily, says Von Doren Asbjørnsen, who describes himself as a hobby player.
