Strengthening Tourist Safety: Operation Black Shield

Operation Black Shield focuses on protecting areas of high tourist and recreational traffic in Panama City.

The Institutional Protection Service (SPI) has initiated measures to enhance security in Panama City’s Old Town and Cinta Costera through Operation Black Shield. This initiative brings 350 additional agents aimed at bolstering surveillance in areas frequented by tourists and locals.

Operational Goals

According to SPI Director Armando King, the primary goal is to identify, manage, and neutralize individuals intending to commit crimes or disrupt the enjoyment of families and visitors. This operation is critical as it targets areas known for their commercial, artisanal, and tourist activities.

Designated Areas for Surveillance

Operation Black Shield will specifically cover the Coastal Belt I, II, and III as well as the Old Town. These locations are not only popular for their vibrant commercial scenes but also serve as significant cultural landmarks.

Establishing Effective Control

With the increased presence of officers, the SPI aims to implement robust controls that can effectively counteract crime and enhance public safety. This is part of an ongoing effort to foster peaceful coexistence in public areas.

Exploring Panama’s Heritage

Panama City offers a rich blend of history and modernity, visible in places like the Old Town. This UNESCO World Heritage site features cobblestone streets and historical buildings, attracting visitors eager to delve into Panama’s past. Key landmarks include Independence Square, the Metropolitan Cathedral, and France Square, which commemorates the Panama Canal’s construction.
