The great talent took special measures – then the parents had to pull the brakes – news Sport – Sports news, results and broadcast schedule

Ada Hegerberg’s old football boots, the “Best on the pitch” award from the cup final and an A4 sheet with washing instructions are among the things in Signe Gaupset’s bedroom. – Hehe, my mum and I made it when I moved here, because I had to learn how to wash clothes, explains the 18-year-old a little embarrassed, before showing us around her dormitory. Here, a stone’s throw from Brann Stadion, she has lived since she moved from her parents in Molde two years ago. It was then that she really started her football venture, even though she knew she was going to become a pro long before that. LAUNDRY LIST: It’s not just about moving on your own when you’ve just turned 16. Then the laundry list from mum comes in handy. According to her trainer in Brann, she has “a sense of purpose that is not quite normal”. And it is precisely that sense of purpose, from a very early age, that caused her to wreak havoc in the cup final and several top league matches at the age of 17. – I am not super surprised either, that she has taken the steps she has, because she was very dedicated for many years, says dad Ketil Gaupset. DAILY CONTACT: Signe Gaupset video chats with the parents every day. Here she talks to dad Ketil Gaupset. Photo: Erlend Havsgård Martinsen / news We talk to him on FaceTime, as he and his daughter do almost every single day. He is naturally terribly proud, and explains that Signe was “extremely eager” in childhood, perhaps a little too much. – We were probably there that we had to slow her down rather than push her. Because she went to the football field when she had time off. She left in the morning and came home in the afternoon and had dinner, and then she went to training in the evening. The amount of training was one thing, but she was also so systematic. As early as ten years old, she started writing down everything she did in training, with and without the ball. – It was quite early, but it was already evident then that I thought it was fun and exciting to follow along, and that I was busy with training, she explains. DESERVED: Although she has just turned 18, there are few of her age who can point to all the titles and prizes Signe Gaupset has won. Photo: Erlend Havsgård Martinsen / news Lost many matches The training diaries have followed her since then, and have been important in finding out what works and what doesn’t. They have been particularly important in recent months. Because just before the start of the season she was injured. A tiring break in the foot turned out to be more serious than expected, and the impatient Brann player was sitting on the sidelines for the first 14 rounds of the series. – It’s heavy and annoying, because you want to play and contribute, she says. But she has trained well, with cycling intervals, swimming in the pool and strength training, and everything is of course noted in the training diary. – It is very good to keep a log so that I can see along the way, but also afterwards, how much effort I have put in. Because if I get injured again, I can look at how I train now and whether it worked. Whether I come back in good shape, or whether I have to make changes for the next injury period. So I think it’s quite clever actually. TRAINING DIARY: Gaupset has no count of how many training diaries she has printed over the years. Photo: Erlend Havsgård Martinsen / news Praises the player Coach Knut Slatleim is relieved that Gaupset is finally injury-free and can play matches again. He describes her as “one of the more exciting players we have seen in Norway for a while” and explains that she is very mature in her playing style despite her young age. That is why he is not surprised to hear that she has worked purposefully and written training diaries since the age of 10. – If there is someone who should have done it, it does not surprise me that it is Signe, no. It shows a sense of purpose that is not quite normal, which you can also see when you work with her during a rehab period. Then there is also a reason why she is where she is, says Slatleim.
