The government meets the opposition on Ukraine aid – news Norway – Overview of news from various parts of the country

The government and the opposition disagree about how much support to Ukraine should be. This year, Norway provides NOK 27 billion in support, but in the proposal for the state budget for 2025, this was cut to NOK 15 billion. The opposition believes this is far too little, and has demanded an increase in support. Høgre has proposed that NOK 45 billion be allowed next year. Therefore, the government met the parliamentary leaders at the Storting on Tuesday, to discuss the way forward for support. After the meeting, Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre (Ap) said that the government proposes to double the proposal to at least NOK 30 billion. – There is a more serious situation in Ukraine. And we want Norway to be a clear and leading supporter of Ukraine’s struggle for resistance. Wants a decision on Thursday In addition to supporting Ukraine militarily, the government also wants the money to be used to secure and build up electrical capacity and power supply in Ukraine. The party in the Storting will now discuss the proposal in the party groups. Støre himself travels to Stockholm to meet the prime ministers of the Nordic and Baltic countries. The Polish Prime Minister will also participate. – Support for Ukraine will be one of the topics at this meeting, says Støre. And so the government has arranged a new meeting with the party in the Storting to conclude on the Norwegian support on Thursday afternoon. Høgre wants more money In Høgre’s alternative budget proposal, the party had put in NOK 45 billion for Ukraine. And even if the government is now doubling its original proposal, Høreleiar Erna Solberg believes it is not enough. – We believe that the situation in Ukraine requires an even greater effort than what the government has put on the table. We have said that 45 billion would be the right amount, as it is today. We are also open to the fact that we may have to spend more. The most important thing is that it has an effect in Ukraine. This applies to the energy sector, which has been a target in the bombings, and which is important to make Ukraine work, and so she believes it is important to build up Ukraine’s capacity to produce ammunition and weapons systems itself. – We especially see in the drone area that they are far ahead with great knowledge. We believe this is important to support. Published 26.11.2024, at 11.56 Updated 26.11.2024, at 12.31
