On March 14, two amateur photographers came across a mammal while they walked in the national nature reserve of the Seine estuary, in Seine-Maritime. “We drew the devices and we photographed what we could”they told France 3 Baie de Seine. Dog ? Wolf ? The two women hesitate and transmit their images to the association responsible for protecting the park, which, in turn, requests the French Biodiversity Office (OFB). Verdict of specialists: animal is a golden jackal. A sort of canine smaller than the wolf but larger than the fox, with rounded ears, with a pointed muzzle and a short tail. On April 3, the OFB announced, this time, that a golden jackal appeared on an image taken by a photographic trap in the Hérault department.

Since 2017, Canis Aureus are spotted sporadically in France. They have now been seen in all regions, with the exception of Burgundy-Franche-Comté. In total, around 80 data (images and other verified information) confirm the presence of this new species of mammal, which has so far never lived in the country.
