The Chilling Tale of Rodney Alcala: The Charismatic Killer
On September 13, 1978, Cheryl Bradshaw made a choice that would haunt her forever. She selected Bachelor Number One on the popular dating show, The Dating Game. Little did she know that the man she chose—tall, with long hair and witty responses—was Rodney James Alcala, a brutal serial killer who had already claimed multiple lives, and would kill again before the year ended.
Early Life and Background
Rodney Alcala was born on August 23, 1943, in San Antonio, Texas. His early life was tumultuous; when he was eight, his father moved the family to Mexico and abandoned them three years later. His mother brought them to Los Angeles, where Alcala would later enlist in the army at 17. His military career was marred by accusations of sexual misconduct and a nervous breakdown, leading to his discharge with a diagnosis of antisocial personality disorder. Remarkably, he graduated with honors in Fine Arts from UCLA, boasting an IQ of 135.
A Pattern of Violence
Alcala’s crimes were particularly gruesome—autopsies revealed a disturbing pattern. He would beat, bite, rape, and strangulate his victims. In many cases, he went so far as to knock them unconscious, wait for them to regain consciousness, and repeat the process. As a twisted souvenir, he would often steal their jewelry, preserving it for years.
The Haunting Escape
On September 25, 1968, police officer Chris Camacho received a call about a suspicious vehicle following an eight-year-old girl named Tali Shapiro. Arriving at the suspect’s apartment, Camacho found Tali unconscious on the floor, surrounded by blood. Alcala escaped through the back door, leaving behind a chilling array of photographs of young girls and identifying documents.
A Brief Arrest and Release
Despite being arrested shortly thereafter, Alcala was released after negotiating a plea deal for lesser charges. He served only 34 months in prison, unaware that he had already committed more murders during his brief freedom.
The Dating Game Appearance
In 1978, after evading serious legal consequences, Alcala appeared on The Dating Game, presented as a successful photographer. Behind the scenes, Cheryl Bradshaw felt a visceral unease talking to him off-camera, leading her to refuse a date. By this time, Alcala had already killed at least four women.
The Murders Continue
Following his TV appearance, Alcala committed more heinous acts. In November 1977, 18-year-old Jill Barcomb was murdered, and by December of the same year, Georgia Wixted, a nurse, was raped and killed. In each instance, DNA evidence would later tie him back to these crimes decades later.
The Climax of His Downfall
Alcala’s notorious killing spree culminated with the murder of Robin Samsoe, a 12-year-old girl, in 1979. His arrest followed a forensic investigation linking him to her disappearance through physical evidence found at his storage unit, which housed various photographs of victims, including Samsoe’s rings.
Trials and Sentencing
Alcala faced multiple trials over the years, with the first ending in a death sentence in 1980, which was later overturned. A second trial yielded similar results but was also revoked. In 2010, new DNA evidence linked him definitively to several murders, leading to another death sentence.
Final Days
Despite his horrific actions, Alcala lived until July 24, 2021, when he died of natural causes while in custody. His story is a haunting reminder that evil can often disguise itself beneath a charming facade, highlighting the chilling reality of the charismatic killer who once captivated television audiences.
