Pack away the trampoline and keep the hat. On Wednesday, the first storm of the season will blow over large parts of the country. The meteorologists offer clear advice: prepare for the storm. For now, the forecast is for a small storm, but it could become quite strong. The storm will extend northwards, bringing a good deal of easterly winds in the north before the wind is expected to subside during Thursday. – But it is a bit early to say exactly how strong it will be, says Austrheim. The storm is expected to hit Nordland during Wednesday evening. Until now, autumn in the north has been drier than in the rest of the country. Official figures from the Meteorological Institute will come over the weekend, but the meteorologist can say that Nordland was the month’s weather winner. – There was the least amount of rain in Nordland, while Møre and Romsdal and the hinterland received the most rain. In September, there were only a handful of rainy days at Hemnesberget in Helgeland. Photo: Isak Kristensen Brun Austrheim says that Lurøy, which is usually the wettest station in Nordland, had less rainfall than normal. – It is conceivable that they have set a local record for the driest September. But during the week, the nice weather is over. Because with wind, storms and south-easterly gales also comes the rain, and Nordland seems to get most of the precipitation. – The rain will start in the south, but it comes mostly in the north, says state meteorologist Austrheim. If you haven’t found the rubber boots yet, it might be time. As we enter the second autumn month, the forest is covered in yellow. Here from Bø in Vesterålen Photo: Nina Ruokajärvi Time to get your car ready for winter And with the autumn weather, it’s also a good idea to start thinking about how your vehicle is shod, says Bård Morten Johansen, head of traffic safety at Trygg Trafikk. – It is better to be safe than sorry, and with studless winter tires there is no need to change before it snows, he says. – Does that mean that you can only wear winter tires all the time? – No, they have poorer properties in summer. When the temperature gets too high on the asphalt, studless winter tires will be worse than summer tires. And if you are one of those who have winter tires at a tire hotel, the advice is clear: Book an appointment to change now. Change to winter tires as soon as possible, advises Trygg Trafikk. Photo: The police The specialist warns that there will soon be long queues to change tyres, and it is wise to pick up the phone before the snow suddenly piles up. But if you are one of those people who have the tire in the garage, you might want to look at it a little more. – If you see that the snow is starting to creep down the mountainside, it is time to take action, says Johansen.
