The fatal accident in Sandvika – the police update – Greater Oslo

On Monday evening, a man in his 60s lost his life after driving off the 4th floor of the Sandvika shopping center car park. On Wednesday, the police will provide an update: – Based on the evidence available at this time, this appears to be a tragic accident. The case is being investigated as a traffic accident with fatal consequences, says police attorney Kathrine Eilertsen to news. The police are still investigating the case based on several hypotheses to gain clarity on what caused the accident. One of the hypotheses concerns a fault with the car. More than 5,000 cars of this same model were recalled by the manufacturer in 2022. The fault meant that the car could suddenly start accelerating without anyone touching the gas pedal. – It has been passed on to the National Road Administration in case they were not aware of it. And that will be part of the checkpoints that they must go through in their technical report, says Eilertsen. – Had a certain speed The technical examinations of the car have not yet been completed, and according to police attorney Kathrine Eilertsen, this may “take some time”. – The car has been transported to Risløkka traffic station, where it will be examined by the Norwegian Road Administration. The emergency services went to the car park in Bærum around 8pm on Monday evening, after the car had driven out of the fourth floor of the car park at Sandvika shopping centre. – The accident car was positioned slightly inside the premises and had a certain speed when it hit the brick wall, says police attorney Eilertsen on Wednesday. This is what the wall in the car park looked like after the accident. Photo: Hallgeir Braastad / news Relatives questioned The man in his 60s was at the shopping center with one of his relatives. He must have witnessed the accident. On Wednesday afternoon, the person was questioned. – The questioning was in connection with her being a witness to the incident, says police attorney Kathrine Eilertsen. The police are still working on several hypotheses about what may have happened. – But the one hypothesis that this may have been a deliberate act has been weakened after today’s questioning with relatives and technical traces at the scene such as wheel tracks, impact point and some witnesses who heard sounds from the car. She emphasizes that suicide has not been a main hypothesis before the questioning either. The other hypotheses are that there was a technical failure with the car, an accident or a case of illness, says Eilertsen. The next of kin were therefore also asked about the man’s state of health and about previous problems with the car. Today, the police have given a mandate to the Norwegian Public Roads Administration for them to start technical investigations, requested video handed over from the shopping center and investigated whether there are more witnesses to question. – We are particularly interested in speaking to witnesses who can say something precise about what happened inside the car park before the car drove off. They are asking witnesses who were present in the car park (P4) who saw the incident or who have other information to contact the police. This is where the car ended up. Here, people must show consideration and understand that this is not entertainment, says Anne Katrin Storsveen Oppegaard to the newspaper.
