19 October 2023 at 12:20 The EU’s human rights prize goes to Jina (Mahsa) Amini The EU’s foremost human rights prize, also known as the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought, is awarded to Jina (Mahsa) Amini. Mahsa Amini was stopped by the morality police in September last year, who accused her of wearing the hijab incorrectly. The police took her to the station for a “reprimanding interview” on 13 September. Here she suffered severe head injuries and ended up in a coma. She was pronounced dead three days later. The 22-year-old’s death triggered huge demonstrations against the Iranian regime around the world. Strong international sanctions were introduced against the morality police.
