The EU will introduce new tariffs on Chinese electric cars – Latest news – news

12 June 2024 at 12:33 The EU will introduce a new tariff on Chinese electric cars The EU will introduce an additional tariff on Chinese electric cars. This is revealed by a press release on Wednesday. It is happening after the EU launched investigations last year, when more and more Chinese electric cars are rolling around on European roads. Car manufacturers that have not cooperated in the investigations, including SAIC – which is behind the MG brand – will receive a duty of 38.1 per cent. The other two major manufacturers, BYD and Geely, will receive duties of 17.4 and 20 per cent, respectively. The reason is that the European Commission believes that the Chinese manufacturers benefit from “unfair subsidies”, which constitutes an economic threat for European electric car manufacturers. The new tariff rates will come into force from 4 July, unless the commission agrees with the Chinese authorities. The new tariff rates are currently a long way from the US’s tariff of 100 per cent, which was announced earlier this year.
