On Tuesday, Bodø/Glimt will play the first of two matches against Serbian Red Star from Belgrade. If Glimt goes ahead, the yellow-clad will secure several hundred million in income. Nevertheless, all the elite series coaches news has spoken to hope for Glimt success. – Why should we whine and laugh about them getting it done? asks YMCA’s coach Johannes Moesgaard. Press conference before the match against Røde Stjerne Unexpected support from Tromsø Glimt also, for once, receives support from its bitter rivals in Tromsø. The northern Norwegian rivalry reached a climax earlier this year when Tromsø lost both head coach Gaute Helstrup, centre-back Jostein Gundersen and scout Jo Nymo Matland to Bodø/Glimt. – I want all Norwegian teams to do well in the European Cup, it is good for Norwegian football, says Tromsø coach Jørgen Vik to news. – Because it also benefits you? – Yes. Photo: Rune Stoltz Bertinussen / NTB Sports manager Lars Petter Kræmer Andressen squirms a little when asked the question. It is clearly difficult to answer whether he hopes the club’s fiercest rival will write Norwegian football history. – If it benefits us, then that is the only thing I will see. I know that it does in a way financially, and then I have to say yes to that, says Andressen. – But that’s only because it benefits us, emphasizes Tromsø’s sports manager. Several of the coaches in the elite series say the same. Although Glimt earns millions from European success, it leads to the Norwegian league achieving a better ranking in Europe. This gives Norway more places in the European Cup. A clear example of this is that next season Norway will get two places in the Champions League qualification, compared to one this year. – I think many supporters have not realized how much the elite series has improved in recent years, with Glimt and Molde at the forefront, and how high we are in the ranking for Europe’s best league, says Jørgen Vik. news has asked several of the elite series coaches if they hope the glimpse will continue. The answer is unanimous: Carina Johansen / NTB Jakob Michelsen, HamKam coach I always support the Danish and Norwegian teams in Europe, so that as many coefficient points and money as possible come into both Norwegian and Danish football. Although it manifests Glimt’s position as Norway’s clear number one, it is also good for Norwegian football. Bjarte Johannesen / news Alfred Johansson, Rosenborg coach What I think is important is that the Norwegian elite series is as high on Europe’s coefficient ranking as possible. Then we will have better access to Europe. It is therefore important that the Norwegian teams do well in Europe. Thomas Andersen / NTB Eirik Horneland, Fire coach I really hope Bodø/Glimt crack the code and get in. Both they and Molde have been European teams over time. They have been good at getting into the group stage and have created good clubs both on the pitch and behind the scenes. They build finances and make good choices throughout. They are a great inspiration for us, both Bodø/Glimt and Molde. NTB Robin Asterhed, Lillestrøm coachYes, I do. It is good for the opportunities for Norwegian teams to progress, of course. More ranking points for Norway is good for everyone, I think. Terje Haugnes / news Jørgen Isnes, Strømsgodset coach It’s good for Norwegian football. I think everyone agrees on that, so we get to cheer on the Norwegian teams. In addition, we will meet Glimt not too long, so it is nice to have a tough match schedule. NTB Bjarte Lunde Aarsheim, Viking coach We must be positive that Norwegian football will take that step. We see that the teams that have been in Europe, they deliver. In a way, it will benefit us, those of us who are fighting for the European Cup places. We have to cheer for the Norwegian teams in Europe. Christoffer Andersen / NTB Christian Michelsen, Sarpsborg 08 coach: I believe and hope they win, that we finally get a Norwegian team in the tournament. Norwegian football needs it. Then we will be put on the map again. I really hope they take it, so that together we can be proud to have a team in the Champions League again. Trond R. Teigen / NTB Kenneth Dokken, Odd coach It would have pleased me, and I think it is important for Norwegian football and the heritage of Norwegian football that we get Norwegian teams in the most prestigious tournaments. Firstly, the other Norwegian team benefits through coefficient points. For me, it is an advantage that they make it to the Champions League. Thomas Andersen / NTB Andreas Hagen, Fredrikstad coach We just have to hope they get out. It benefits us, also financially. It shows that they have worked very well over a long period of time. There are fantastic performances by Kjetil Knutsen and not least Horneland. The Rosenborg coach: – Don’t you enjoy it? Rosenborg is the last elite league team to play in the Champions League. It’s now 17 years ago, and brings back more good memories from rival clubs. – When Rosenborg was in the Champions League, it excites, it entertains and gives hope to everyone else in Norwegian football, says YMCA coach Johannes Moesgaard. Rosenborg’s coach Alfred Johansson hopes Glimt will progress, but admits that there are mixed feelings. – It’s not like I enjoy when a competitor wins football matches. But it is important that Norwegian football has good access to European games. There, Rosenborg has contributed enormously over the past 20–30 years. Someone else has to carry the load now, until we are ready to help again, says Johansson to news. Bodø/Glimt secures a minimum of NOK 220 million if they make it to the group stage. But the YMCA is a current example of the fact that the budget does not decide football matches. Both matches between YMCA and Bodø/Glimt have ended in a draw this season. – Yes, they get a lot of money, but the rest of us have to work better. We, with no money at all, manage to compete with teams on ten times the budget. I let myself be inspired by what happens, says coach Johannes Moesgaard. Published 19.08.2024, at 13.56
