– A few times a year we get what I call a porn magazine in the mail. We get a bull catalogue, a sheet with pictures where it says about the various bulls, says Torunn Hovde. She is the farmer behind the bull Lyndi-P, who will soon spread his genes across the globe – if he performs. Torunn Hovde from Sokna is the chef behind the recipe that created the bull Lyndi-P. Every year around 100,000 bulls are born in Norway, and Lyndi-P is among the 24 that can call themselves elite bulls. As all the bulls in Norway are DNA tested, you can look for the characteristics you think will suit your own cow. She used this to find a suitable father, and fell on the bull Nesse from Vikebygd in Rogaland. Torunn Hovde and the “ox porn magazine” where she found Lyndi-P’s father. The company is owned by Norwegian cattle farmers and carries out breeding and development of the Norwegian red cow (NRF). The breeder is very proud of the two-year-old bull, which has now gained a new meaning in life – to produce semen. – He has to be eager, so I would say that keeping his enthusiasm is one of his tasks in everyday life, she says. Deliver to deliver Normally, Lyndi-P can deliver two “charges” a week, says Hans Storlien in Geno. This corresponds to between 400 and 1000 doses. The price of the doses will vary. In Norway, a regular dose is sold for NOK 335 and a sex-separated dose for NOK 560. That is to say, a week’s work for Lyndi-P, with maximum pay-out on dose capture and without gender separation, gives a value of NOK 670,000 on the Norwegian market. Geno can separate the semen into female only, so buyers know they are getting dairy cows. Photo: Lars Erik Skrefsrud / news Lyndi-P will continue to produce as long as he stays healthy and fast, says Storlien. But everything depends on demand not disappearing. – If the market wants access to the bull, it will continue production. If demand stops, the bulls will eventually be slaughtered, he says. For each weekly delivery of Lyndi-P, you can fill up to 1,000 of these sperm straws. The USA has bought almost 5,000, and both Germany, Great Britain and Ireland have bought Lyndi-P’s product. – He is a very popular bull, says Storlien. Hovde sold Lyndi-P to Geno when he was 14 weeks old for NOK 15,000. The profit from the sale of his semen goes to Geno SA and contributes to future product development. That the farmers who breed the animals get rich from the elite titles, says Storlien, is a rare commodity. – It is a big feather in the cap. The neighbor will probably let himself be impressed, he says. Hans Storlien (left) and Geno bought Lyndi-P from Hovde for NOK 15,000 when the bull was 14 weeks old. Photo: Turi Nordengen / Geno
