Coffee is going downhill here in Norway, and only our Finnish neighbors drink more than us. – I think it’s a bit embarrassing to spend so much money on coffee. It describes how poorly I prioritize my finances and budget, says student Tiril Kristine Sortland (22). At least 500 a month, the student friends have each bought their own coffee at OsloMet. – It’s just laziness that I don’t bring coffee from home, admits Sortland. She spends NOK 500 – 600 on coffee a month. – It is so easily accessible when you are out, she adds. The friend spends around NOK 550 a month on coffee, even though she has a coffee maker at home. – I treat myself to an iced coffee outside. But I should perhaps buy a more expensive funnel that is better, so I can save money by not buying coffee outside, says Sandra Aspehaug (22) Pays off quickly – I swallow coffee and make coffee at home every other day, and there are four or five cups a day, says Håkon Kjelland-Mørdre (26). Photo: Oliver Ivanowitz / news For students, coffee is cheaper, and at Blindern the medical student paid NOK 29 for a cup of black coffee. – We have funnels at home, so now I’m going to start with that too. I’m going to buy a thermos, says Håkon Kjelland-Mørdre (26). Before, he bought four cups of coffee at the place of study every day. They only cost NOK 12 a cup, because he brought his own cup. – If you do it every day, it will be around NOK 200 a week, NOK 1,000 a month. I can’t afford that. That’s why I started bringing instant coffee, he adds. 🧮Coffee costs🧮 Illustration: Caroline Utti / news ☕There are many coffee makers in the shops, both expensive and cheaper. 🫰🏽Coffee maker: NOK 2000 💰Coffee cup in a cafe: NOK 45 🛒2000/45 = 44.44, rounds up to 45 🤑We assume that you drink three cups a day ☕It “costs” 45 cups to finance a new coffee maker ➕ 45/3=15 🟰If you drink three cups a day, it takes 15 days to finance a coffee maker for NOK 2,000 🥤Thermo cup: NOK 200 💳Coffee filter 200 pieces: NOK 40 🫘One kilo of filter coffee: NOK 200 🫧200+200+40=440 kroner 🧋440/45=9,779, rounds down to 9 because the kilo of coffee and 200 coffee filters last a very long time ☕9/3=3. It takes another three days to finance the thermal cup, coffee and coffee filter 🫖We have based the calculation on an expensive funnel. With a more affordable funnel, it takes less time before the purchase pays off. A good coffee maker usually costs NOK 2,000, but it takes a surprisingly few days before it pays off with your own coffee maker. A cup of filter coffee often costs NOK 45 or more. If you drink three cups per day, the coffee machine itself is financed after 15 days. Coffee filter, coffee and thermos cup are added, but after three new days this is also saved. ☕☕☕ Coffee savings project – Write down all the amounts of coffee you use during a month, and see how much goes into coffee, encourages Lise Vermelid from the Money Talk podcast. – There is a difference between queuing to buy a cup of coffee several times a day, and enjoying a coffee with a friend every now and then, says Lise Vermelid. Photo: CAROLINE UTTI / news Three cups at your favorite cafe every day is over NOK 4,000 a month. – Every time you stop buying coffee, you can transfer the same amount to an account you call “savings for the Copenhagen weekend”, or something else you can look forward to, she suggests. You don’t have to cut all the cups you buy outside. Decide when you want to indulge, and make the other cups at home. – If the economy doesn’t give you a good enough reason to change your cafe visits, then create a good enough reason. The smell of newly brewed coffee brewed at home is very good. For a period I actually had the coffee maker on the bedside table so I could wake up to the smell of freshly brewed coffee, she laughs. Which coffee you choose to brew, of course, also affects the price of the coffee cup. But you can choose pretty good coffee beans, and buy a bean grinder, and still get a much cheaper cup than in a cafe. – Make it an experience, and taste your way through all the varieties in the store. Do you notice any difference between the most expensive and the cheapest? Find your favourite, and buy lots of bags when it’s on sale, says Vermelid. Whole beans keep best and for a long time in the freezer. If your favorite is hugely expensive coffee beans, you can always wish for them for Christmas! The students think it is a lot about time, but also about the taste of the coffee. – It’s nice to make coffee in the morning, I often do that. But it is social to drink coffee outside, Sortland thinks. – It is very expensive to buy coffee outside when you can make the same at home. I usually buy coffee on Sundays and before work. Often to be social, says Aspehaug. Test our coffee calculator and check how much you spend on making coffee at home per year. Hi!🙋🏾♀️I write financial matters for young people.
