3 February 2023 at 02:56 CIA believes China is considering an invasion of Taiwan by 2027 CIA chief William Burns says that Chinese President Xi Jinping’s ambitions regarding Taiwan must not be underestimated, and that an invasion of the island is being prepared. According to Burns, the United States has intelligence indicating that Xi has ordered the military to be ready to launch an invasion of self-ruled Taiwan, which China claims as its territory, by 2027. – This does not mean that he has decided to invade in 2027, or any other year, but it’s a reminder of how serious he is and of his ambitions, Burns said during a visit to Georgetown University on Thursday. – Our assessment in the CIA is that I would not underestimate Xi’s ambitions related to Taiwan, he continued, but also added that Xi has probably been surprised by how badly it has gone for Russia in the invasion of Ukraine.
