‘Dungoons & Dragons’ is the  quintessential role-playing game , and its reign has not diminished in the slightest since 1974, when its most primitive version debuted. Although initially rough and somewhat unapproachable, the game still had decades ahead to evolve into the  accessible entertainment that captivates millions of fantasy enthusiasts worldwide  today.

At the  Comic-Con de Málaga , we had the opportunity to hear from Jeremy Crawford, one of the architects behind the fifth edition of the game. This edition is considered the most modern and user-friendly, as it simplifies classic rules without losing the richness and complexity that made ‘D&D’ famous. Crawford, a passionate game enthusiast, is also a keen analyst of the franchise’s draw.

The fifth edition broke sales records from its launch, with 3 million copies sold. Crawford noted,  “It is the first edition of D&D whose sales have not stopped increasing.”  So what factors contributed to this unprecedented success? A significant part can be credited to the explosion of online streaming of gameplay. Crawford highlighted,  “Thanks to the fundamental role of Dimension 20 and many other live games programs, now you can just enter YouTube, Twitch, or other services to see how the game is played. You can see how fun it is and that it is not as intimidating as it might seem due to the extensive rules.”

An important factor in this growth is the  “analog” aspect  of that diffusion: players have been sharing their enthusiasm for the game with friends and family and inviting them to try it. This has made the game feel fresh and new to many, despite its fifty-year history. Crawford explains,  “Much of what happened is that you started telling your friends. You started inviting your family.”  This emotional connection contributed to the sustained increase in sales, a rarity in previous editions that usually saw a drop after their initial release.

However, this success didn’t appear from thin air. There are several  foundational elements  that the design team studied before inception. Crawford mentioned that his team not only delved into previous editions but also immersed themselves in the books that inspired the original games, such as the novels of Elric, ‘The Lord of the Rings’, H.P. Lovecraft, and Conan stories. Understanding these sources was pivotal to grasp what the original D&D creators used as their foundation. Much of this material was included in the reading list that Gary Gygax provided in the first edition of the Dungeon Master guide.

Additionally, Crawford has a  deep love for ancient mythology and world history , which heavily influences his work. His personal interests, coupled with travels throughout Europe and readings of ancient occult and historical texts, serve as a significant portion of his inspiration for creating fantastic worlds. Crawford aims to understand how people thought in the past to translate that thought process into the worlds and adventures they create, offering a rich array of options for players by pulling from as many sources of inspiration as possible.

Finally, Crawford detailed the steps followed to determine which elements of ‘D&D’ to retain and which to evolve during the fifth edition’s design. One crucial aspect he mentioned was,  “play a lot. There is nothing like playing your own game as a designer.”  In the case of ‘D&D’, this also involves stepping into the role of Dungeon Master. This enthusiasm and connection to the game were palpable as Crawford engaged with the audience.

'Dungeons & Dragons', a history of one and many lives

Crawford shared with the audience that  “any of you who are a game director in ‘D&D’ or other role-playing games are essentially game designers.  Being a game designer means crafting experiences for others to enjoy, which is exactly what a Dungeon Master does.” He concluded with practical advice:  “Every time someone asks me, ‘What should I do to be a game designer?’ I often say you have to be a game director, as it allows you to experience in real-time how people respond to what you’ve created.”  This vital insight highlights that the designers of the game were also players, establishing a key foundation for the continued success of ‘Dungoons & Dragons’ in its fifth edition as it thrives today.

For anyone intrigued by the magic of storytelling and creativity, ‘Dungeons & Dragons’ transcends the role of simple entertainment; it offers a portal into vast realms of imagination, connection, and adventure that continues to thrive in modern culture.
