Canada has recorded what is believed to be the country’s first case of bird flu in a human. The infected person is a teenager in the province of British Columbia. The teenager, who is being treated at a children’s hospital, is probably infected by a bird or an animal, the provincial authorities said in a statement. They are working to find the source of infection and to map who has been in close contact with the teenager. Canada’s Health Minister Mark Holland writes on X that the risk remains low for the public. H5 avian influenza is widespread among wild birds worldwide, and there have been outbreaks in poultry flocks in the United States and among people who work with poultry. In Canada, infection has been detected at at least 22 farms that deal with poultry. So far, there has been no documented human-to-human transmission. If that happens, it could trigger a pandemic, according to scientists. (NTB)
