Few things are as engaging as when grocery stores put new products on the shelves. And these can engage in several ways. If you are particularly from central Norway and further north, perhaps the combination at one of this year’s launches is extra fun. This spring, Rema launched 1,000 novelties on the taste front – so-called taste kits – in their own R series. The Trønder-based chain’s taste kit should provide Asian dishes in 1-2-3, but the word can be read in several ways. It has created reactions in social media. – I think it was a bit on the edge. To be hip and fresh like the young, says the grocery expert. – The youth today are very English-language oriented. The Norwegian language is disappearing more and more, and as an adult I have to say that I notice that young people use words and expressions – which I did not know in my youth, at least, he says. – Has an important role Simple is often the best, says Rema. And combining Norwegian and English can seem a bit easy, some would say. – A number of newer words from English are not at all understood by everyone. So we believe that this is unfortunate, both that it is a mixture that in this case becomes particularly comical, says department director Daniel Gusfre Ims in the Language Council. He points out that it can both be about irritation and understanding when you don’t understand the words. Ims believes that the shops have an important role in conveying a good and understandable language. Personally, he would rather use words like “set” or “package”. – Is there a bit of The Christmas Calendar about that? – Yes, exactly the word ‘kit’ is one of those that I react to in general, because it is usually very good to use another Norwegian word instead. Which is a strange mixture, when you haven’t seen the strange effect this mixture has either, says Ims. In English, this product will be referred to as a “cooking scratch kit”, which may not be as easy for our customers to understand and therefore we renamed it “smakskit”. – We think the word “kit” is a well-established word that is also used in, for example, “taco dinner kit” which you have been able to find in most stores for a number of years, says Mellbye.
