Stjørdal municipality in Trøndelag has recently struggled with recurring youth crime. In the last two weeks, a dozen burglaries have been reported. That worries the residents. – Now it has been very bad. It is frightening, says Gunnar Wergeland. He is the store manager for Spar Hegra and says that he has had two burglaries in the store in the past year. Last night on Tuesday, the thieves attacked a hardware store. The thieves are also said to have broken windows on their way into the building. The police feel that they are not delivering Two of the perpetrators are already in custody, while three others are under 18 years of age. The police believe they lack the tools to deal with the situation. – The criminal minimum age is 15 years and many people think that then there is an immediate punishment and everyone is treated equally, but it is actually 18 years in reality. That’s what Annar Sparby, head of investigations at Stjørdal police station, says. Colleague and police superintendent Arne Henrik Ulvin says that they know the responsibility. – The police live off society’s trust, and now we realize that we are not delivering. Ordinary youth This week, representatives from the police, the municipality and the business community met for an emergency meeting to discuss measures against the recurring crime. – They are ordinary young people from the Stjørdals district who were born and raised here, says police chief Ulvin. – The focus has been on whether these are young people from institutions, but they are not, he adds. Ulvin believes it will take time to solve the problem and is calling on the politicians. – The politicians have to be on the field, and we feel that they are on their way to that. – This is a national trend and not just a metropolitan phenomenon. Measures During the emergency meeting, concrete measures were presented to prevent vandalism and break-ins. – We don’t have cash in the store, we have camera surveillance and every case will be reported. That’s what Jon Uthus, who is head of the Business Association in the Værnes region, says. Published 08/08/2024, at 14.26
