Hundreds of protesters have stepped up in Trump Tower in New York on Thursday, US media writes. Several of the attendees had signs and posters. There was, among other things, “Fight against the Nazis, not against students” and “free mahmoud, free Palestine,” NBC writes. The organization “Jewish voice for peace” flocked it all directly. They require student Mahmoud Khalil to be released. Khalil was arrested last week. He was a central figure in the Gaza demonstrations that arose at the Columbia University of New York last year. He was arrested after President Donald Trump ordered foreign students, who participate in what he believes are illegal demonstrations, will be deported. Mahmoud Khalil was born in Syria and has Algerian citizenship, but has Palestinian roots. Photo: Jeenah Moon / Reuters Khalil has a residence permit in the United States. He is also married to an American citizen. On Wednesday, hundreds of protesters met outside the New York courthouse to condemn the arrest. Many wore traditional scarves, symbols of Palestinian identity and resistance. Protesters also surrounded Tom Homan, Trump’s “Border-Tsar”, who was visiting New York. Homan has stated that Mahmoud is a threat to national security. Tom Homan, Trump’s head of national borders, was confronted by Palestinian activists in Albany, New York. The activists were waiting for Homan, who was in New York to confront the state government that oppose the “borderline” strict border policy. The protesters also addressed the imprisoned Palestine activist Mahmoud Khalil, who Homan has referred to as a national security threat. Accused of Hamas support Khalil has not been charged with anything criminal, and it is very rare for anyone to be deported without a penalty. However, the Trump administration believes his presence in the United States is contrary to their national and foreign policy interests. Can the United States only deport Khalil? Immigrants can obtain a residence permit in the United States with a so -called green card. It gives them permission to live, study and work in the United States – but does not make them citizens. It is up to an immigration judge to recall the visa. A green card is usually deprived because a person commits a crime and is convicted. They can also lose it if it is shown to lie during the immigration process, lost their jobs or leave the country for a long time. One can also be deported for security reasons, for example for espionage or membership in a terrorist organization. However, a rarely used provision in the Immigration Act states that if the Foreign Minister believes the person’s presence or activity in the United States poses a risk to “unfortunate foreign policy consequences”, they may be made to court to deport. It is this provision that has been used in the argument against Khalil. The law, however, requires clear evidence that Khalil’s stay in the United States has serious consequences for foreign policy. Foreign Minister Marco Rubio has accused Khalil of participating in anti -Semitic actions and of showing support for Hamas. He said everyone who does this will be “removed from the United States” – this is not about freedom of speech. This is about people who have not had the right to be in the United States to begin with. According to the White House, Khalil has organized demonstrations that disturbed teaching and made Jewish students feel unsafe. They also claim that he distributed Hamas propaganda during the demonstrations. No evidence has been provided to the charges. Khalil has even rejected them. – They just want to show Congress and right -wing politicians that they do something, regardless of the consequences it will have for us students. This is mainly an attempt to prevent propalestine statements, he said last week. Blocked the deportation The US judge Jesse Furman has temporarily blocked the broadcast of the student. At the hearing on Wednesday, Furman expanded the blockage to have more time to assess whether the arrest of the student is in violation of the Constitution. His lawyer Ramzi Kassem believes Khalil is a goal because he has criticized the US and Israeli authorities, writes the New York Times. “It’s not just in American, it’s also unacceptable,” he said Wednesday. According to Khalil’s lawyers, he has not been able to talk to them on a two -handed hand since he was arrested. Kassem believes Khalil was moved to Louisiana as punishment for trying to get him released. The arrest in front of his wife The 30-year-old was arrested in front of his wife Noor Abdalla, who is pregnant for the eighth month. She says that it happened after they had been on an iftar dinner, CNN writes. “The immigration authorities tore my soul from me when they put my husband in handcuffs and forced him into an unmarked vehicle,” she said in a statement. Promises more arrests in a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote that this was the first of many arrests, claiming many of the protesters were not students, but were paid to encourage rebellion. Khalil will appear in court on March 27, according to ABC News. Published 13.03.2025, at. 18.02 Updated 13.03.2025, at. 18.17
