Went to primary school in Vandve and has a one-year internship from secondary school in Solfjellsjøen in Dønna. He went whaling for the first time as an 8-year-old. He spent 18 months at sea between 1962 and 1964. In 1967 he took the coastal skipper’s exam and got his first boat of his own in 1971. He later had nine more boats. Bastesen has a long career as a shop steward within the Norwegian Fishermen’s Association and the Norwegian Raw Fish Association and as a municipal politician. He was chairman of Nordland Småkvalfangerlag/Norges Småkvalfangerlag from 1984 to 1996. Storting representative for eight years for the Cross-Party People’s Party (1997–2001) and the Coastal Party, which he himself founded in 1999 (2001–2004). He was still active in the party both as an honorary member, a member of the executive board and local boards. – It was a very sad message to receive. Most northerners are clear in their language, but he was in a special position clear.
