On the penultimate day of the training session in Torsby, shooting coach Siegfried Mazet gave the biathlon men a task. Shoot two bursts lying down and two bursts standing up as quickly as you can. The video on Johannes Thingnes Bø’s Instagram account, and at the top of the case, shows that he only takes 10.4 seconds from the time he stands on the mat until he has shot down all five flashes! A shooting series the likes of which have hardly been seen. Neither did his teammates. – I tried to shoot so fast, and then there were five misses, says strong shooter Sturla Holm Lægreid. – It is almost like that many people do not have time to reload before he has fired the next shot, says Johannes Skjevdal-Dale. HIT SURE: Johannes Thingnes Bø believes he has improved his shooting even further since last season. Photo: LISA LEUTNER / Reuters A fast series in a competitive context is often just under 18 seconds. – I had a bad day for the rest of the day and wondered how I could top it. I haven’t tried anything similar afterwards, so to speak, says Vetle Sjåstad Christiansen. – Typical Instagram stunt Big brother Tarjei Bø, on the other hand, is a little more skeptical. – It’s a typical Instagram stunt. He’s the best in the world, but there are a lot of people who look like a million bucks on that app. If he takes it back, then I will pay tribute to it with everything I have. And the main character reveals that he actually had two misses and one miss during the task itself, but that the coach asked him to try again. – I thought he could do better, because he was close to doing something exceptional, recalls Mazet, who filmed the session. – I felt I had it in, and then it sat. I think they will probably struggle to beat it where those who try, says Thingnes Bø himself. – It wasn’t luck What also distinguishes the super series from competition is the pulse. During the super series, it was much lower – around 130-140 strokes per minute, the biathlete estimates. – So of course we don’t want to see the same thing on TV during the competition, there is too much risk. It is impossible, Mazet states. – I have no plans to run that shooting any time soon, assures the 30-year-old from Stryn. – Was it intended as a scare shot before the new season? – It was not luck. The standing shooting looks good before the winter, and that is a good sign, Thingnes Bø answers, but also gives his big brother a little bit of justice: – Social media is a facade. Only what is good ends up there, he grins, WC KING: Johannes Thingnes Bø won five golds, a silver and a bronze at the WC in Oberhof in February. Photo: NTB And this autumn there has been a lot that has been good for the new father of two. – He has become a better shooter, more stable at a high level. We have worked on becoming faster in the stance, on breathing and on becoming faster with the first shot, explains shooting coach Mazet. Thingnes Bø also won the previous test race, with flawless shooting. – It feels good and it’s good to feel that you are up there before it breaks loose. If you do something badly, you question things. Then it’s good to give yourself some security, instead of the opposite. I am very ready for the winter, says the world’s best biathlete.
