## Soria’s New Fortress: Numant-IA Data Center

More than two thousand years ago, on the hill of Numancia, its inhabitants chose to resist rather than surrender to the siege of the Roman legions. This resilience is etched in Soria’s history, symbolizing defiance against overwhelming odds. In modern times, however, the Ministry of Defense has proposed a different kind of fortress. This time, the Valcorba industrial estate will host Numant-IA, a cutting-edge data center that leverages artificial intelligence (AI) for national defense.

## A Unique Project

Spain’s government has unveiled a significant investment initiative called Numant-IA. This data center aims to merge technology with military capability in a way that mirrors ongoing developments seen in the United States. Set to be part of the Center for Advanced Defense Technological Capabilities, this project aligns with the Annual Contracting Plan of the Ministry of Defense (PACDEF 2026). It comprises an extensive framework with more than 7,800 proposals and a total investment of over 10 billion euros.

### Investment Overview

This ambitious venture will involve an investment that has jumped from an initial 70 million euros to nearly 130 million euros. This budget will particularly fund operations focused on AI applications, logistical support, and the processing of classified data, establishing the center as a crucial asset for military operations.

## Soria: A New Technological Hub

The establishment of the Numant-IA data center will transform Soria into a technological capital. The government announced the project last September, revealing plans to utilize nearly four hectares of land provided by the Soria City Council. Lieutenant General José María Millán, director of CESTIC, emphasized that the center would enhance the Armed Forces’ capabilities through advanced AI systems.

## Military Applications

The primary focus of Numant-IA will be military applications. Resources will be allocated to handle classified information critical to operational logistics. The project is part of broader initiatives, including the development of “Gonzalo,” an AI-driven tool akin to ChatGPT, designed specifically to assist the military safely and effectively.

### Employment Opportunities

Upon becoming operational, Numant-IA is expected to employ around 20 permanent staff members, with its continuous operation contributing to substantial economic benefits for Soria. The construction phase will also generate temporary employment, further impacting the local economy.

## Timeline and Uncertainties

The Ministry of Defense estimates a construction period of 24 months, targeting completion by early 2028. However, questions remain about the specific infrastructure and capabilities the data center will offer. Notably, while 67.88 million euros are earmarked for servers and information systems, further details on these investments have not yet been disclosed.

## Promoting Sovereignty and Decentralization

Choosing Soria for the Numant-IA data center aligns with a broader military strategy that emphasizes decentralization. By distributing defense resources across various locations in Spain, the government aims to mitigate risks associated with centralizing critical operations. This decision also resonates with ongoing discussions in Europe about achieving greater digital sovereignty.

## Conclusion

Soria’s transition into a technological powerhouse with the Numant-IA data center underscores Spain’s commitment to modernizing its defense capabilities through artificial intelligence. With substantial investments and strategic planning, this project will not only bolster military efficiency but also foster local economic growth, redefining the landscape of both Soria and Spanish defense.
