Coreweave, an  American tech giant , has  commissioned ACS , a prominent Spanish construction company, to build a massive  data center  in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. This ambitious project, valued at  $6 billion  (approximately  €5.16 billion ), is set to kick off with  100 MW of power , with plans to expand to  300 MW  in the future. Once completed, this facility is destined to become one of the largest data centers in the world, highlighting the growing significance of data infrastructure worldwide.

Importance of the Initiative. While Spain may not be at the forefront of manufacturing specialized chips or developing significant AI models, it is carving out a crucial niche within the  global tech supply chain . This initiative signifies Spain’s increasing role in erecting the  physical infrastructures  that enable technological advancements, particularly in AI. With the escalating demand for data processing and storage, the need for robust data centers is reaching unprecedented heights.

ACS, through its subsidiary  Turner , is taking the lead in constructing data centers in the United States, boasting a portfolio surpassing  €12 billion . This expansion is a prime example of how international collaboration can facilitate significant advancements in technology and infrastructure.

The Reacting Landscape. The United States is in dire need of infrastructure to support the ongoing  AI revolution . Currently, data centers in the U.S. consume approximately  4.4%  of the nation’s total electricity, with projections suggesting this could rise to  12% by 2028 . The demand for electricity is staggering: from  58 TWh  in 2014 to a forecast of up to  580 TWh  by 2028, indicating an explosive growth rate.

ACS is already collaborating with major tech companies like  Meta  and  Vantage Data Center , showcasing its capability to support leading firms in the tech sector. Turner, as a subsidiary, is significantly driving ACS’s recent growth, reflecting a well-planned strategy aimed at leveraging the booming demand for data infrastructure.

Employment Opportunities. The construction of the Lancaster data center is expected to generate  600 jobs  during the building phase and establish  70 initial permanent positions , which could expand to  245  as operations ramp up. Remarkably, Coreweave estimates that each direct position will result in the creation of  six additional jobs , amplifying the project’s economic impact.

In a related context, this announcement comes on the heels of a substantial investment pledge from former President  Donald Trump , who has promised  $70 billion  in AI infrastructure. This suggests a competitive landscape for AI and data infrastructure that is about to intensify.

The Broader Picture. The developments don’t stop with ACS; several Spanish companies are also emerging as formidable players:

  • ACCIONA is actively building solar parks that will power data centers.
  • Electric Network is exporting cutting-edge smart grid technology.
  • Ferrovial is vying for digital infrastructure contracts in the U.K., expanding its international footprint.

Spain has discovered its domain—while it may not invent AI itself, it demonstrates expertise in constructing the buildings, networks, and energy infrastructures that make such virtues possible.

Future Prospects. ACS has committed to developing  2,000 MW  of new projects, with an additional  4,000 MW  already identified. The company has even anticipated the potential for further growth in the sector. In 2023, ACS acquired land in  Madrid  for its first data center in Spain, with operations set to commence in  2025 .

Spain is not merely an observer in the AI revolution; it’s emerging as a vital partner in the  infrastructural transformation  needed to support this new technological paradigm. By focusing on building essential frameworks, Spain is playing an indispensable role in the evolution of global technology, one construction site at a time.

In conclusion, while many nations are vying for dominance in the AI and tech landscape, Spain is strategically positioning itself not just as a follower, but as a vital contributor to the very foundations that will support future advancements. The Coreweave-ACS partnership is just one of many indicators of how countries can collaborate to harness the immense potential of technological growth while also creating jobs and stimulating economies. As Spain continues to develop its capabilities in data infrastructure, it will undoubtedly carve out a significant space in the international tech arena.
