23 December 2022 at 01:45 Spain and Scotland allow transgender people to choose their own gender The Spanish National Assembly passed a new law on Thursday that makes it easier to change legal gender. The only thing that is required is that trans people themselves declare that they want to change their legal gender. The bill has divided the Spanish government and the country’s women’s organisations. Before the law comes into force, it must also be approved by the Senate, which is expected to happen within a few weeks, according to Reuters. When the law comes into force, anyone over the age of 16 can change the legal gender on their ID papers. Scotland also decided on Thursday that transgender people can change their gender on their own initiative. There is no longer a requirement that they must have a medical diagnosis. In Scotland, too, the age limit is set at 16.
