5 January 2024 at 05:13 South Korea orders evacuation near the border with North Korea The army in South Korea asks that the inhabitants of the island of Yeonpyeong be evacuated, reports Reuters. In the early hours of Friday, North Korea fired more than 200 coastal artillery shells in the direction of the island. Yeonpyeonga is three kilometers from a disputed boundary line between North Korea and South Korea in the Yellow Sea, and 12 kilometers from the North Korean coast. All the shells landed in the sea, on the North Korean side of the Northern Limit Line, which serves as the maritime border between North and South Korean waters although North Korea has never recognized it. Around 2,000 people live in Yeonpyeonga in addition to the fact that there is a military base there. South Korea calls the artillery fire a provocation and says the country will respond. It has been announced that the South Korean defense forces will hold a military exercise in the area.
