 Sleep apnea  is characterized by  repeated interruptions  in breathing while sleeping. These interruptions cause frequent awakenings and a decrease in the quality of sleep, manifesting as excessive daytime sleepiness, irritability, and difficulty concentrating. These symptoms can lead to more severe health complications, including cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and obesity.

Traditional Remedies: Conch Blowing Technique

A recent study has explored a  unique treatment  for sleep apnea: the ancient practice of  blowing conch shells . This method, known as  Shankha , originates from a religious  Hindu  ritual and is performed using a specific type of marine snail known as  Turbinella pyrum . Remarkably, it is proposed that this traditional technique can also serve as a remedy for obstructive sleep apnea.

This study suggests that the  conch-blowing technique  presents a low-cost and straightforward intervention to alleviate symptoms associated with moderate sleep apnea. Conventional Treatments for Sleep Apnea

Currently, the most prevalent treatment for sleep apnea is the  Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP)  machine. This device maintains an open airway by delivering a constant stream of air through a mask, allowing patients to breathe easier while sleeping. Although effective, many users report discomfort and difficulty adjusting to the machine, highlighting the need for alternative treatments that are more user-friendly.

Bridging Experience and Science

The study led by  Dr. Krishna K. Sharma  arose from observing the positive effects of the  conch-blowing method  on respiratory health. This observation prompted the scientific inquiry into its efficacy, resulting in a small trial focused on validating its benefits for individuals with moderate sleep apnea.

Research Findings

A total of  30 participants , aged between 19 and 65, were included in this research. Sixteen individuals practiced the conch-blowing technique, while the control group engaged in  deep breathing exercises . The participants committed to at least 15 minutes of practice each day for a duration of six months.

Impressive Results

The findings indicated that individuals practicing the conch-blowing technique experienced a  34% decrease  in daytime sleepiness compared to the control group. Furthermore, participants reported fewer apnea episodes and showed improved  blood oxygen levels  during sleep. The comprehensive results were published in the reputable journal  ERJ Open Research , managed by the  European Respiratory Society .
