Understanding the Shutter Network’s Proposal for a Threshold-Encrypted Mempool

The Shutter Network, an open-source protocol, has put forth a groundbreaking proposal to incorporate a threshold-encrypted mempool on the BNB Chain. This initiative aims to eradicate malicious activities tied to **Maximal Extractable Value (MEV)**, including front-running and sandwich attacks, while simultaneously enhancing real-time censorship resistance.

Benefits of an Encrypted Mempool

The proposed encrypted mempool is designed to offer “complete protection” against front-running and sandwich attacks, as indicated in a press release shared with Cryptonews. The implementation of this technology is expected to significantly reduce interference opportunities during transactions, ensuring that transaction orders are finalized before they become visible to any entities involved.

The encryption mechanism guarantees that both encrypted and standard transactions can coexist. Furthermore, by employing a decentralized methodology, the system minimizes the risk of a single entity being able to decrypt or manipulate any transaction. This decentralized approach lends credibility to the process and enhances user confidence.

Ethical Foundations Behind the Proposal

The proposal stems from Shutter Network’s commitment to the ethical vision advocated by the BNB Good Will Alliance. This organization is dedicated to safeguarding user interests in the ever-evolving blockchain landscape. Under the proposal, Binance Chain validators will have the ability to include encrypted transactions in their block proposals. The encryption of transactions occurs before they enter the mempool, effectively locking in the order of transactions before any party, including validators and bots, can see their content.

This innovative approach claims to “effectively eliminate” opportunities for front-running, a practice that has frequently plagued blockchain transactions and has already been evidenced on the Gnosis Chain during earlier trials.

Collaboration and Future Plans

Shutter Network’s initiative is a collaborative effort featuring contributions from brainbot GmbH, Erigon, and NodeReal. The collective team submitted the proposal as a BNB Chain Evolution Proposal (BEP) for the community’s deliberation. However, the proposal has yet to outline specific assignments, milestones, or resource allocations, which will be determined in subsequent phases.

Analyzing MEV Activity on BNB Chain

Shutter Network highlights a worrying increase in MEV activities on BNB Chain, which notably affected over $1.5 billion in decentralized exchange (DEX) trades within just one day in late 2024. Even Binance’s founder, Changpeng Zhao, experienced the adverse effects of such manipulative practices.

Renowned blockchain innovator Vitalik Buterin has emphasized that encrypted mempools are essential for effectively addressing value extraction issues. According to Buterin, this technology allows users to broadcast their transactions in an encrypted format, securing their integrity before they are included in blocks.

Long-term Solutions for MEV

Brainbot’s Head of Product, Luis Bezzenberger, pointed out that most existing MEV solutions only tackle surface-level problems. They often introduce new forms of centralization and depend on manual processes, such as blacklisting decoys. He concludes that genuine goodwill from BNB validators requires a commitment to implementing encrypted transactions, making Shutter’s encrypted mempool a vital step for the future.

Additionally, Shutter Network’s encrypted mempool has been operational on a designated OPstack testnet since March 2024. It has also been utilized on the Gnosis Chain since July 2024, with a comprehensive whitepaper mapping out how to implement this system on the Ethereum mainnet.
