– We do not have a piece of legislation that protects the players and it is shocking to hear. That’s what Frode Grøndahl says to news. He has been a doctor at Sandefjord football club for 14 years. On Saturday, the Norwegian Football Association’s prosecution committee concluded that Kjetil Knutsen cannot be sanctioned, after he did not listen to medical personnel during the match against Sandefjord. Knutsen received strong criticism for not taking Jostein Gundersen off the field after two headers in the match, even though the home team’s match doctor thought he should. The NFF’s prosecution committee also criticized Knutsen’s behaviour. Calling for better regulations – We must have rules where sanctions can be imposed, Grøndahl points out to news. Furthermore, in the reasons given to the prosecuting committee, it is stated why they cannot sanction the incident: “The NFF’s procedure for handling head injuries has the character of being a guideline/guideline, and not a set of regulations to which legal actions can be linked”, the press release said. “The prosecution board has therefore decided that the case should not be pursued further”, it said. At the same time, they urged the NFF to consider whether the procedure should be legislated in the NFF’s regulations. NFF’s procedures for head injuries Concussion can be very harmful if treated incorrectly, and there is a great risk of serious long-term injuries. In some cases, it can be career-threatening if players are not replaced immediately after a head injury. In the event of a head injury, only the doctor or the medical apparatus must decide whether it is safe for the player to continue the match. If one of the teams does not have their own doctor/medical device with them on the bench, then the teams agree that the opponent’s doctor/medical device assists in the assessment and treatment of head injuries. It is expected that both teams’ head coaches are informed of the importance and background of the procedure, and that they follow the decision of the doctor/medical apparatus. Source: NFF Grøndahl, who is calling for clearer rules, has always understood that the procedure is a rule that must be followed, and that this was to be calculated as just that – a set of rules, both before, during and after the match. He was therefore taken to bed by the fact that the incorporated procedure is not, as a rule, to be reckoned with. CRITICAL: Sandefjord doctor Frode Grøndahl. Photo: Private – I find it serious that the players cannot be protected with the guidelines. No doctor or medical personnel has seen this as anything other than rules, says the Sandefjord doctor. – Medically understandable, Grøndahl emphasizes that there was no aim to hit Knutsen, but that there must be consequences when you go against the call of the doctor, as the Glimt coach did in the meeting with Sandefjord last weekend. Now he fears the ripple effects. – It gives a signal effect that is unexpected and harmful, says Grøndahl and continues: – It includes the principle that the health of the players should be the focus. Head injuries can be career- and, in the worst case, life-threatening. It is medically understandable that there cannot be a stronger reaction to this, he points out further. Grøndahl has previously been in several meetings with the NFF where they have discussed head injuries, and how it should be treated in a match situation. He believes that a breach of the procedure must be considered a breach of the rules and thus lead to sanctions. – The procedures are set up to protect the health of the players. If the procedures are not seen as rules and that violations cannot therefore be sanctioned, something must happen. Has asked the NFF for a justification The leader of the sports union Niso, Kristoffer Vatshaug, has sent an e-mail to the NFF in which he asks for a basis for why it is not sanctioned. He also wants Niso to be involved in the further development of the procedures. – The most important thing is that there is agreement on the procedure. We want to strengthen the procedures so that there is a sanctioning system for such incidents in the future, says Vatshaug to news. CONTACT NFF: Niso manager Kristoffer Vatshaug. Photo: NTB Niso is critical of the incident and believes it is important that it is sanctioned when there are offenses that could be life-threatening for the player. Vatshaug says that it does not work for Niso that such incidents are not sanctioned. – It is not good enough. With such vital events, there must be a way to impose sanctions. He has a good understanding that Grøndahl sees it as demanding to know what the procedures mean when such incidents occur. – Therefore, the doctor must be sure that their decision is final, period. If it is exceeded, there must be a reaction. – What changes should be made? – We have to look at this together with the NFF, and perhaps the referees need to be more involved in such situations. The doctor must have the final answer, without the player or coach having any say in the matter. news has asked the NFF for a comment on the matter, so far without a reply.
