There was a heated debate between two members of the party Red during the Debate on news on Tuesday evening. Central board member Joakim Møllersen has in recent weeks called for a halt to arms deliveries to Ukraine. – I believe that NATO opposes negotiations. Most people say that the war will end at the negotiating table and then we must get to the negotiating table as quickly as possible, said Møllersen. WATCH VIDEO: Joakim Møllersen (R) accuses Norway of not working for peace in Ukraine. – That the war drags on is in NATO’s interest. We support the resistance. But Norway is not working for peace today, stated Møllersen. He met opposition from party colleague and professional secretary Boye Ullmann. – We are sending weapons that force Russia to the negotiating table. Several people are changing their minds Mímir Kristjánsson wants to give Putin a nose job – with weapons. Photo: Rødt After yesterday’s broadcast, several high-profile members of the party are now flagging that they have changed their views on the party’s current policy. Party secretary Benedikte Pryneid Hansen tells news that she has now changed her mind. – I think Norway should support Ukraine with weapons. Ukraine is now waging a righteous struggle against an aggressive adversary. They have every right to defend themselves. This is in line with the UN Charter, and Rødt should support this, I believe. I am happy about the debate and I hope we arrive at a position that we can support Ukraine with weapons, says Hansen. Rød Ungdom’s leader and central board member Alberte Tennøe Bekkhus goes out in the Klassekampen on the same day and supports a complete turnaround. – I have gone inside myself, and many of the arguments we had against sending weapons have turned out not to be valid. Ukraine is now fighting an intense defensive battle. It has only been possible because they have been given weapons. To then say no to doing that, I feel as if you are indirectly weakening the resistance, she says. Mímir Kristjánsson is also a new addition among the supporters of arms assistance. – Russia is waging an imperialist war of aggression in Ukraine. Ukraine needs to defend itself, and they need weapons to defend themselves. If there is to be an end to this war that ends in peace and not occupation of Ukraine, then the Ukrainians’ resistance struggle is bound to succeed. And Putin needs to get a nose piercing, says Kristjánsson to news. – Has it been failed policy from Rødt not to support this? – Yes, I think Rødt should turn around in this matter. I have done that myself, says Kristjánsson and adds. – The mere fact that Nato supports this defensive struggle cannot be an argument for not wanting to defend the Ukrainians in that way. Moxnes: Happy for the debate Party leader Bjørnar Moxnes has declined to be interviewed by news today, but has responded to the criticism in a post on Facebook. – We condemn Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, contrary to international law. Ukraine has every right to defend itself against the brutal war of conquest, and Rødt supports the resistance, writes Moxnes. He acknowledges that there are different views on weapons within the party and that he is happy about the debate. – At the same time, I have not wanted to preempt the debate that is currently taking place in the party. Some may think it is strange, but I have thought it is right for the sake of party democracy. On the other hand, he warns against branding dissidents as lackeys for Putin or NATO and the US. – Our democracy is stronger than Putin, and it requires that we also tolerate real debate, not create a situation where those who disagree with the majority are necessarily accomplices for foreign powers, writes the party leader on Facebook.
