Several elderly people have been defrauded of nearly NOK 5 million, according to the police – news Innlandet – Local news, TV and radio

Organized criminals have recently defrauded several elderly people in the interior. According to the police in Innlandet, they must have managed to defraud them of close to NOK 5 million, they write in a press release. According to the police, the criminals must have called the elderly people and stated that they were calling from either the bank or the police. – They tell the person they call that they are about to be defrauded, and that someone has taken control of their bank account, says Rune Otterstad, police inspector in the Innlandet police district. According to the police, it is about organized criminals who are behind the actions. The fraudsters have said that they want to help the elderly, and have managed to obtain bank account numbers, BankID, passwords and other sensitive information. In this way, they have managed to swindle sums of money from several victims. Some have been defrauded of large sums of money. – Several people have been defrauded for smaller amounts of money, but there are also cases where someone has been defrauded for over a million kroner, says Otterstad in the press release. The police explain that it is demanding to investigate such fraud cases. Therefore, they ask everyone who is called by someone who claims to be assisting to prevent fraud, to be extra careful. The police advise those who receive such calls to ask follow-up questions. Once this has been done, the fraudsters will have hung up the phone. Another piece of advice the police give is to hang up if you get a call. – If you are unsure, hang up. You can contact your bank or the local police yourself and ask if it was them who called, says Otterstad. He further says that neither the police nor banks will ask for BankID and password over the phone. If someone does this, it may be a sign that you are about to be scammed.
