The Challenges Facing the Automotive Sector and the Role of Rosa Serrano

07/19/2025 THE MEP OF THE PSOE, ROSA SERRANO. Spain PSOE Political Aragon.

In the wake of transforming the  automotive sector , Rosa Serrano, the Altoaragones Eurodiputada representing the PSOE, advocates for a comprehensive strategy to support both  companies  and  workers . With significant challenges looming over this sector, Serrano emphasizes the necessity of a responsible approach to ensure a smooth transition. Speaking to Europa Press, she asserted, “This sector needs a responsible response to the great challenges it faces”.

Improving Cross-Border Connections

Serrano’s initiatives extend beyond the automotive industry. She actively pushes for enhanced  cross-border connections  between Spain and France, particularly in Aragon. One of her main focuses is the  reopening of the Somport Tunnel , which could greatly improve infrastructure and mobility. As a speaker in the Transportation Commission, she is also involved in budget discussions to prioritize the  transport sector .

The Pyrenean Central Crossing (TCP) is another critical project on Serrano’s agenda. She highlights the importance of the  Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) , noting that while projects targeting completion by 2030 and 2040 are prioritized, preparatory studies for long-term projects like TCP, anticipated for completion by 2050, can still receive funding. “Securing financing for this project depends significantly on France’s support,” she warns, referring to France’s previous reluctance to fully support TCP initiatives.

Key Transportation Projects

In the area of strategic  transportation corridors , Rosa Serrano is adamant that projects like the Cantabrian-Mediterranean corridor are vital for both national and European logistics. This corridor connects the Mediterranean Sea to the Atlantic Ocean, linking two major ports, Valencia and Bilbao. It serves as a vital artery for trade and is crucial for fostering economic growth and  employment  opportunities. According to Serrano, improvements in transport infrastructure play a key role in boosting connectivity for companies and citizens alike.

Moreover, Serrano emphasizes collaborative efforts between Spain and Aquitaine, stating, “We have worked diligently for the opening of this railway line,” referencing the reopening of the  International Railway Pass of Canfranc . She describes it as a significant achievement, showcasing effective  political and administrative cooperation .

Diplomatic Relations and Trade Relations

Addressing concerns over existing  trade tensions  with China, Serrano supports a diplomatic approach proposed by the Spanish government. She views Spain, Aragon, and China as strategic partners, particularly for the agri-food sector. Serrano highlights Aragon’s reputation for quality and efficiency, asserting that recent partnerships, such as Stellantis establishing itself as a battery supplier in the region, indicate China’s recognition of Aragon as an economic hub.

Looking ahead, Serrano is focused on negotiating the future  European Union budget . She expresses concern that the European Commission’s proposals reflect a shift toward Euroscepticism, jeopardizing the ongoing European project. This shift could result in cuts to essential services and public investments, which would have negative repercussions on the citizenry. “We refuse to transition from a Europe of regions to a Europe of nations where the voices of our territories are silenced,” she reinforces.

Prioritizing Regional and Rural Development

Furthermore, Serrano advocates for a  rural agenda  that includes resources specifically aimed at combating depopulation and addressing the impacts of natural disasters such as floods. Concerns regarding the shift in EU budgeting priorities away from  cohesion policies  and rural development are paramount for her, as she emphasizes that the needs of rural areas must not be overlooked.

In sum, Rosa Serrano’s ongoing work within the European Parliament aims to balance the complexities of large-scale transportation initiatives, international trade dynamics, and the urgent needs of regional development. Her focus on collaboration, infrastructure, and strategic partnerships outlines a vision for a more connected and strong Europe, ensuring that all regions have a voice in shaping the future.
