On May 5, Sergio Daniel Gaxiola Galindo, a promising 16-year-old boxer from Ciudad Obregón, Sonora, was shot and killed shortly after leaving his boxing training. Excited for an upcoming match scheduled for the following Saturday, a day before Mother’s Day, Sergio never made it home. Just five houses away, he faced a horrifying encounter with armed teenagers who had long pressured him to partake in illegal gang activities. Following his refusal, he was tragically shot and later succumbed to his injuries in the hospital.
A Young Aspiring Boxer
Sergio was a dedicated student at CETIS 69 and had aspirations to excel in the boxing ring. According to his mother, Mar Stephanie Galindo, the match he was preparing for represented a significant opportunity for his future. Sadly, this dream was cut short by violence linked to organized crime.
A Family in Fear
After the attack, Mar Stephanie discovered threatening messages on Sergio’s phone, indicating that he had been the target of intimidation. He had kept this information private out of fear for his family’s safety, particularly given their involvement in a nighttime food-selling business.
On the fatal night, while passing through the Los Ángeles neighborhood, Sergio was confronted by the assailants on a motorcycle. Reports indicated that at least 18 shell casings were found at the scene, marking the tragic culmination of ongoing threats against him.

The family, deeply affected by this loss, was compelled to leave their home due to escalating violence in the Santa Fe neighborhood. Mar Stephanie described the area as rife with danger, where gunfire from youth gangs had become a distressing norm.

In response to the murder, the Attorney General’s Office of Sonora announced the arrest of two 17-year-olds who allegedly played a role in the crime. The arrests, executed the day following Sergio’s death, were part of an investigation into another case. Authorities seized firearms and narcotics that matched the weapons used in the shooting.
Sergio’s mother has taken an active role in advocating for justice, even bringing her son’s story to the attention of President Claudia Sheinbaum. During a recent visit, she expressed her desire for accountability, not revenge, as a means to prevent further violence.
