Dicle Üniversitesi İlahiyat Fakültesi Öğrencisi Sena Düzgün’ün Trajik Vefatı

On May 27, 2025, the tragic news of  Sena Düzgün , a second-year student at the Dicle University Faculty of Theology, shook the community of Diyarbakır when she was found dead, hanging from a tree in the garden of the Oncology Hospital. An investigation was launched immediately upon the discovery of her body, leading to police and medical teams being dispatched to the scene.

Authorities confirmed that Sena had already succumbed to her injuries by the time help arrived. Following an autopsy, she was laid to rest by her family. The entire incident has raised serious questions about her mental health and the circumstances surrounding her death.

Intensifying the Tragedy: The Suicide Note

In a shocking twist, investigators uncovered a  suicide note  written by Sena, which pointed towards a faculty member, Assistant Professor A.P., as a pivotal figure in her despair. The note contained alarming expressions of anguish, and it is believed that Sena had been involved in a romantic relationship with the professor. “I left everything behind; clothes to charity, books to the university, and my fish to Ahmet,” the note stated. The haunting message continued, urging others not to mourn her with flowers or extended goodbyes, declaring “Asıl mesele Ahmet, asla mezarıma gelmesin.” This translates to “The real matter is Ahmet; never come to my grave.”

These words have led to serious implications regarding the relationship dynamics at the university, drawing attention to mental health issues among students.

YÖK Takes Action

In response to the unfolding situation, the  Higher Education Council of Turkey (YÖK)  launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Sena Düzgün’s death. They have assigned inspectors to look into the allegations against Assistant Professor A.P., thereby underscoring the gravity of the incident. The university community is now left to grapple with these troubling revelations while seeking accountability and support for mental health services.

The Impact on the University Community

The tragic loss of Sena Düzgün has reverberated throughout Dicle University, leaving students, staff, and faculty in shock. Many students have expressed their feelings of helplessness and concern for mental health support. The administration is now under pressure to ensure that adequate resources are available for students who may be struggling with similar issues.

Universities across Turkey are being urged to take proactive measures in addressing mental health concerns. Educational institutions must implement comprehensive support systems to help students cope with stress, anxiety, and other emotional challenges that they face. This distressing incident serves as a stark reminder of the necessity for open conversations about mental health and support systems within academic environments.

What Can Be Done?

The circumstances surrounding Sena’s death lead to critical questions regarding mental health awareness among students. Initiatives to create a supportive environment can include regular  mental health workshops , the incorporation of counseling services, and fostering an open dialogue about emotional well-being. Furthermore, it is imperative for universities to  train faculty and staff  to recognize signs of distress among students and guide them in seeking help.

Creating an  inclusive campus culture  that encourages students to speak up about their issues without fear of stigma is essential. Sometimes, all it takes to save a life is the willingness to listen and support one another in times of darkness.

Conclusion

The sad demise of Sena Düzgün highlights the urgent need for improved mental health initiatives in educational settings. By addressing these critical issues and fostering an environment where students feel safe and supported, institutions can help prevent further tragedies. It is time for universities to take clear and decisive action towards creating a nurturing atmosphere that prioritizes the mental well-being of all students, ensuring that not one more life is lost due to the silent battles they face.
