Today, the best environmental photographers are honored. A total of six winners have been chosen in six different categories. The Environmental Photographer of the Year photo competition is organized by the British environmental protection organization Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM), and aims to raise awareness of the topic of environmental protection. This is the 15th time the award has been held. Although the pictures are meant to challenge and be an inspiration, the backdrop is serious. This is written by Terry Fuller, managing director of Ciwem. The world is in the middle of a natural crisis that is described as as serious as the climate crisis. The Flamingos The photograph of the three dead flamingos underlines the seriousness and Mehdi Mohebi Pour won the main prize under “Environmental Photographer of the Year”. “The Bitter Death Of Birds” Photo: Mehdi Mohebi Puor / Mehdi Mohebi Puor The three birds are just some of the thousands of birds that die every year in Iran due to pollution and lack of water, the press release states. – It is a surreal depiction of the circular relationship between humans and animals, while at the same time conveying how the environmental problems affect our planet, states the jury’s reasoning. The birds have started to return. But award winner Mehdi Mohebi Pour believes the incident in the picture is serious, and should lead to changes. – I want people all over the world to know about this tragic event, if we don’t reconsider our own lifestyle and take care of the planet, this will also happen in other countries. 16-year-old received an award The young photographer Fayz Khan received the award for young environmental photographer of the year. The 16-year-old’s photo shows a flock of flamingos flying over Lakes Natron and Magadi in Kenya. “Beautiful But Hostile Colors On Earth” Photo: Fayz Khan The image has been praised for being classic and well composed, while at the same time highlighting the effects of the climate crisis in Kenya’s Rift Valley. – We are happy to support such a young talent like him. His photography will continue to have an impact in the future, says Stefan Maier, general manager of marketing, Nikon Europe.
