What unique qualities do the characters in Thunderbolts possess? How does the portrayal of antiheroes compare to traditional heroes in the MCU? What was Sebastian Stan’s view on the complexities of his character, Bucky Barnes? How has Florence Pugh described her experience working on a Marvel film compared to other projects? What role does Julia Louis-Dreyfus play in Thunderbolts and how does she feel about her involvement in the genre?
Thunderbolts touched down in Los Angeles on Monday night, with stars Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan, David Harbour, Wyatt Russell, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Hannah John-Kamen, and Lewis Pullman debuting the latest Marvel project.
The film follows an unconventional team of antiheroes — Yelena Belova, Bucky Barnes, Red Guardian, Ghost, Taskmaster, and John Walker — as they come together for a dangerous mission and is earning strong reviews following a rocky period for the MCU over the past few years.
On the red carpet, Stan told The Hollywood Reporter, “It’s always funny when there’s that dynamic with people like these characters, right, because technically are they villains? Are they heroes or not, where do they stand? It’s what [his character] Bucky Barnes is essentially, he’s always been trying to figure it out and they are too.”
Stan has played the role for nearly 15 years, appearing in a host of Marvel projects including the Captain America films, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, and the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday.
Now, he said, “I feel like the hardest era for Bucky, for now, has passed,” and when it came to playing the character in Thunderbolts, “I always thought of Clint Eastwood in Unforgiven when I was broaching this movie. It’s sort of like the older guy that’s been there, done that; so ‘take it from me kid’ kind of thing, that’s where the sense of humor was coming from. But it’ll be interesting to see how people feel” about Bucky this time around.
Pugh, whose Yelena Belova serves as the group’s front woman, also spoke about how being in the MCU is vastly different from her other projects.
“Working on a Marvel movie is always so bonkers, you’re like, ‘We’re going to do that?!’ And it’s shocking the moment when someone tells you like, ‘We’re going to put you on a wire,’ let alone being like, ‘We intend for you to jump off the second highest building in the world, how do you feel about that?’” she joked. “You would never try to implement that in the normal day job, that’s crazy.”
Louis-Dreyfus, who plays CIA director Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, echoed, “To be a part of this genre of moviemaking, there are really no words for it. It’s a complete blessing and I’m just delighted to be a tiny little piece of it, just because why wouldn’t I want to be part of this fun?”
Thunderbolts hits theaters on Friday.

Sebastian Stan Channeled Clint Eastwood for ‘Thunderbolts’
In the realm of superhero cinema, casting choices can make or break a character’s onscreen presence. In Marvel’s latest installment, "Thunderbolts," Sebastian Stan takes on a pivotal role that has fans buzzing with excitement. This time, he draws inspiration from an unexpected source: the legendary Clint Eastwood. Stan’s artistic choices, derived from Eastwood’s iconic performances, serve as a fresh lens through which to view his character, as well as a unique homage to cinematic history. Let’s delve into how this influence shapes Stan’s performance and what it means for the film.
The Rise of Sebastian Stan
Sebastian Stan, a talented actor known for his portrayal of the Winter Soldier in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), has always been someone who immerses himself in his roles. His journey began with smaller roles in films and TV shows before he gained widespread recognition for his role in "Captain America: The Winter Soldier." Since then, he has developed a complex character arc that calls for layers of depth, emotion, and intensity. With "Thunderbolts," in which he reprises his role as Bucky Barnes, Stan seeks to push these dimensions even further.
Channeling Clint Eastwood
Clint Eastwood, known for his stoic and rugged persona, has been a staple figure in American cinema for decades. His performances in films like "Unforgiven" and "Dirty Harry" have left an indelible mark on the industry, characterized by a powerful, understated delivery and a commanding presence. Stan recognized the value of these traits as he approached his role in "Thunderbolts."
By channeling Eastwood, Stan aims to blend emotional gravitas with a no-nonsense demeanor. This reflects the overarching themes of "Thunderbolts," which revolve around characters with morally complex backgrounds seeking redemption and purpose.
Drawing Parallels
Bucky Barnes, previously known as the Winter Soldier, is a character riddled with trauma, guilt, and a quest for redemption. Stan sees parallels between Bucky’s struggle and the characters Eastwood has portrayed over the years. Just as Eastwood’s characters often grappled with their pasts, Bucky must confront his history as an assassin and an agent of Hydra while attempting to forge a new path.
In interviews, Stan mentioned how Eastwood’s iconic squint and minimalist dialogue are elements that resonate with him. He aims to embody a sense of quiet strength throughout "Thunderbolts," allowing his character to convey depth without overly relying on exposition. This serves to enhance Bucky’s character arc, making him more relatable and grounded.
The Impact on ‘Thunderbolts’
"Thunderbolts" features an ensemble cast of anti-heroes and morally ambiguous characters, each with their own unique backgrounds and motivations. This film seeks to explore the idea that not all heroes wear capes, a theme that aligns perfectly with Stan’s interpretation of Bucky.
As he channels Eastwood, the subtleties of performance become crucial. Rather than a straightforward action hero, Stan aims to present Bucky as a complex individual who struggles with his identity. This allows for a richer narrative where the stakes feel very real—not just in terms of physical confrontation, but in emotional and psychological dimensions as well.
Collaborating with a Talented Cast
Stan’s commitment to channeling Eastwood goes hand in hand with his work with an impressive cast. The film features a mix of seasoned actors and rising stars, each bringing their own flair to the table. The chemistry among the actors allows for deeper character interactions, further enhancing Stan’s portrayal.
This collaborative environment creates a dynamic that echoes the ensemble casts of Eastwood’s films, where individual stories intertwine to paint a broader picture of redemption and sacrifice. In "Thunderbolts," Stan’s approach encourages other actors to capitalize on their characters’ backstories, resulting in a performance that feels cohesive and interconnected.
The Legacy of Eastwood
Clint Eastwood’s impact on cinema cannot be understated. As a director, producer, and actor, he has continually reinvented what it means to tell a compelling story on screen. For Stan, channeling Eastwood is not just an homage; it’s about understanding the weight of performance and the importance of emotional honesty.
By embracing this approach, Stan pays respect to the past while forging his own path in the superhero genre. The moral ambiguity that Eastwood often portrayed in his characters gives Stan the freedom to explore Bucky’s vulnerabilities, making the character more rounded and authentic.
Looking Ahead
As "Thunderbolts" continues to generate buzz, audiences eagerly anticipate how Stan’s performance will resonate alongside others in the film. With a nod to cinematic giants like Eastwood, he is poised to deliver a standout portrayal that adds to the rich tapestry of Marvel’s universe.
In conclusion, by channeling Clint Eastwood for his role in "Thunderbolts," Sebastian Stan not only honors a cinematic legend but also elevates his character to new emotional heights. This creative choice emphasizes the complexity of Bucky Barnes and promises to deliver a performance that will resonate with fans old and new, reaffirming the notion that true heroes evolve from their pasts and strive for redemption. As the anticipation builds, all eyes will be on Stan to see if he can capture the essence of Eastwood while making the role uniquely his own.
Sebastian Stan has embraced a distinctive approach for his role in “Thunderbolts,” drawing inspiration from the iconic Clint Eastwood. His portrayal is said to reflect Eastwood’s classic tough-guy persona, integrating elements of grit and resilience. This alignment aims to bring a new depth to his character, melding Eastwood’s legendary presence with the complex dynamics of the Marvel universe. Fans can anticipate a thrilling performance that pays homage to cinematic traditions while carving out a unique narrative in the superhero landscape.
