Rushdie is “getting the help he needs” after he was flown to hospital, Governor Kathy Hochul said at a press conference on Friday, the BBC reports. She says efforts are underway to gather more information about the perpetrator who attacked Rushdie at a literary event in the state. Hochul praises a policeman who was on the scene and quickly intervened and “saved the lives” of Rushdie and the speaker, who was also attacked. Hochul condemns the attack and says it is important that people feel they are free to “speak and write the truth”. A doctor who was present at the event and gave first aid to Rushdie, says the author had suffered several stab wounds, including one on the right side of the neck, writes the New York Times. She says Rushdie did not receive cardiopulmonary resuscitation and that people said “he has a pulse, he has a pulse”.
