The Russians have become particularly aware of what they believe to be Norwegian military buildup on Svalbard after the Norwegian Navy’s frigate “Thor Heyerdahl” sailed into Longyearbyen harbor on 21 September. “As before, the visit of this largest warship of the Norwegian fleet is presented as a ‘demonstration of sovereignty’ for Norway over the archipelago,” says spokesperson Maria Zakharova.
