Rory McIlroy angry after golf drama – raged against American caddy – news Sport – Sports news, results and broadcasting schedule

– There were some scenes on hole 18, but there is only fuel on the fire before tomorrow. That’s what Rory McIlroy told the Ryder Cup organizer shortly after the dramatic end to Saturday’s game. American Patrick Cantlay delivered birdies on all four of the last holes and was absolutely central as the USA turned around to a narrow victory on the last hole of the course. There, the American made his birdie putt at 13-14 meters, which led to huge scenes of jubilation in the American camp. The two European players, Rory McIlroy and Matt Fitzpatrick, both had shorter birdie putts left afterwards, but both missed. And it was in the commotion between Cantlay’s winning putt and McIlroy’s birdie attempt that the temperature rose to new heights. In the American camp, everyone waved their hat in the air (more on the background of that later), including Cantlay’s caddy, Joe LaCava. LaCava was at the time in the middle of the green and close to where McIlroy was going to hit. – I spoke to Rory. He politely asked Joe to move because he was in his line of sight. He stood there and didn’t move for a while, while he kept waving his hat, so I think Rory was upset because of that,” said Europe captain Luke Donald at a press conference. On his way off the green, LaCava was approached by, among others, Europe’s Shane Lowry, who seemed to have a clear message for the American. – Surreal images of Joe LaCava being confronted by the European team. I’ve never seen anything like it on a golf course, wrote Golf Magazine journalist Dylan Dethier at X. GOT A CLEAR MESSAGE: Shane Lowry was among those who spoke to LaCava (with his back to him) after the finish. Photo: TT NYHETSBYRÅN – Doesn’t belong anywhere Joakim Mikkelsen comments on the Ryder Cup in Norway for Viaplay. He is clear in his speech about the situation. – It’s just completely over the line and inappropriate for Patrick Cantlay’s caddy. You don’t fly away and wander near a player who is getting ready, he says, and continues: – He goes there and starts an argument when McIlroy is about to putt. It doesn’t belong anywhere. Mikkelsen believes that it is a klink cactus for him. LaCava has, among other things, been a caddy for Tiger Woods for several years, while he is now Cantlay’s permanent caddy. – He is known as a professional and very experienced caddy. He is simply losing his mind, says Mikkelsen. AFTER: McIlroy spoke with LaCava after they finished playing. Photo: CARL RECINE / Reuters – No matter how you look at it, as McIlroy gets ready to putt, you just have to get away, says the commentator, adding that he can’t remember seeing anything like it before. USA captain Zach Johnson was asked if he understood why there was a furor among the Europeans. – I think you only see passion and the complete register of emotions that is in the Ryder Cup. I don’t think there is anything more or less than that, says Johnson. Resting in the parking lot About an hour after the round, a video began to circulate on Twitter, showing McIlroy in an intense discussion. Next to him was the caddy of American Justin Thomas, Jim “Bones” Mackay. McIlroy then pointed towards something behind Mackay, before Lowry came in again and pushed McIlroy towards the car that was going to drive the golf star away from the Marco Simone course in Rome. On the way into the car, McIlroy is said to have shouted, according to ESPN: “This can’t happen. This cannot happen. It’s a damn shame.” – Rory obviously felt that a limit was crossed on hole 18. I will take it up with him when I see him again, says Donald about the incident out in the parking lot. According to Johnson, however, it should all have been resolved. – I spoke with Joe (LaCava). He said he spoke to Rory after the round and everything was fine. That’s what I know, says Johnson. DOWN TOUR: Rory McIlroy didn’t get the finish he wanted on Saturday. Here he is on his way off the green after the end of Saturday’s afternoon match. Photo: PAUL ELLIS / AFP Rejects sun hat protest The American victory in Saturday’s last match means that the American team has little hope before Sunday’s conclusion, where twelve singles matches will be played. Europe leads 10.5-5.5 and needs four points to win the tournament. It came after a morning session where everything again went Europe’s way. Viktor Hovland and Ludvig Åberg beat the super duo Scottie Scheffler and Brooks Koepka with record numbers and towards the end there were reports of discord in the American team. It was Sky Sports journalist Jamie Weir who reported on the disputes, and he wrote at the same time that Patrick Cantlay must have been the instigator of the alleged split. This is the Ryder Cup golf tournament in 2023. The tournament is played between a European and an American team, each with twelve players. This year’s tournament, which is the 44th in a row, is played at the Marco Simone golf course in Guidonia Montecelio outside Rome. The tournament is played over three days. On the first two days, four duels are played in foursome and four duels in fourball. In both game variants, the players go in pairs, and only eight players from each team play in each round. In foursomes, the two teammates tee off on every second hole, and they also hit the ball every second time on the individual hole. In fourball, they play as in a normal golf competition, but only the best result is valid. The tournament ends with singles duels on Sunday. Here, one player at a time meets for a duel, and all twelve players must be in action. Matchplay is played on all three days. This means that the team/player who wins the most holes wins the duel, not the team/player who has used the fewest strokes over 18 holes. A total of 28 matches are played, and the winner of the Ryder Cup is the team that wins the most matches during the weekend. The USA has not won away from home since 1993. Europe managed it in 2012. (NTB) According to Weir, Cantlay believes that the players should have been paid to play in the Ryder Cup. Weir also claims that Cantlay refuses to play with the USA’s shadow cap because of it. The case is categorically rejected by USA captain Johnson. – There is no division in this dressing room. This is one of the teams with the best cohesion that I have been a part of, he says. Cantlay himself was asked at the press conference on Saturday evening whether he thought the players should be paid to play in the Ryder Cup, a question he did not answer directly. However, he could say that he does not wear a sun hat because it “doesn’t suit him”. AUDIENCE TREND: The spectators in Rome were quick to wave their shades for Patrick Cantlay after the Sky Sports article. Photo: GUGLIELMO MANGIAPANE / Reuters Because of the article on Cantlay, he was met throughout much of the afternoon session with the European supporters waving their sun hats in the air as he approached. The Americans responded with the same wave when Cantlay made the important putt on hole 18. – I have never received so many standing ovations. I think it was fantastic, says Cantlay, and says that he only heard about the alleged sun hat protest when he had finished his afternoon round. PS! In Sunday’s singles matches, Viktor Hovland will play Collin Morikawa. CELEBRATION: The Americans celebrated by taking off the hat for Cantlay.
