Crackdown on Drug Trafficking in Nuevo León: The Arrest of Rocka
In a significant move against drug trafficking, the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC), alongside Civil Force and the State Attorney General’s Office of Nuevo León, have successfully apprehended José Rogelio Alonso Rodríguez, known as “Rocka,” in Monterrey. He is identified as a key operator and plaza boss for the Los Chapitos faction of the renowned Sinaloa Cartel.
Details of the Arrest
According to sources consulted by Infobae México, “Rocka” managed multiple drug distribution points across the municipalities of Santa Catarina, García, and San Pedro Garza García before his capture. During the arrest, authorities confiscated several incriminating items:
- 42 plastic bags containing crystal meth
- 23 plastic bags believed to hold cocaine
- A digital scale
- Two mobile phones
- Cash
The Context of the Arrest
The arrest unfolded after a series of intelligence operations and ground patrols conducted around Río Nazas Street and Lázaro Cárdenas Avenue, located in the Roma neighborhood. Authorities discovered a property disguised as a mechanical workshop, which was, according to official reports, a drug storage site.
Subsequently, the SSPC announced that Rodríguez would be presented to the State Attorney General’s Office to facilitate further investigations, conducted alongside the Federal Attorney General’s Office (FGR), the Secretariat of the Navy (Semar), the National Guard (GN), and the Secretariat of National Defense (Sedena).
The Growing Threat of Los Chapitos
Mexican authorities have intensified their crackdown on operators belonging to the Los Chapitos group, who have shifted parts of their criminal structures to Nuevo León and other states to evade federal operations in the northwest region of the country.
In April 2025, FGR agents arrested Samuel Alejandro Sánchez Amador, also known as “El Cholo”, in Mocorito, Sinaloa. He acted as the logistical coordinator for fentanyl trafficking, and authorities confiscated an army-exclusive rifle, 816 fentanyl tablets, and $17,500 in cash.
Significant Arrests in Recent Months
Another notable arrest was that of Joel Enrique Sánchez Cárdenas, nicknamed “La Morsa”, a trusted associate of Aureliano “El Guano” Guzmán Loera, who was detained in January in Benito Juárez, Mexico City. Previously, he operated fentanyl labs in Elota, Sinaloa, and utilized properties in Monterrey and Playa del Carmen as hideouts. His arrest followed an investigation by Semar and the Ciminal Investigation Agency (AIC).
Finally, Horacio López Gastélum, brother of Omar López Gastélum, alias “El Pelón” and both operators of “La Chapiza” in Baja California, Sonora, and Sinaloa, was arrested in December 2024. Horacio was responsible for moving resources and managing safe houses, while his brother’s arrest had occurred a month earlier, marking a notable achievement in the ongoing fight against drug-related crime.
The recent capture of “Rocka” exemplifies a well-orchestrated strategy to curb the influence of drug cartels in Mexico, especially the Sinaloa Cartel’s factions, showcasing the dedication of Mexican authorities in combating this pervasive issue that deeply impacts society.
