Riise himself confirms on Facebook that he is stepping down as head coach for Avaldsnes on Wednesday. – Today I am writing with a heavy heart to share some news. After two incredible years, I have decided to retire as coach for Avaldsnes’ women’s team, writes John Arne Riise. Sports manager Rune Lothe in Avaldsnes tells news that the reason is the club’s finances. – This is something he has come up with himself, without us having suggested it or anyone having to ask for it. It is very magnanimous, and shows what a wonderful person he is, says Lothe. John Arne Riise’s contract actually lasted until 2024, but says that the financial problems at the club led to the decision to give up. – After much thought, I have realized that my departure can contribute to the club’s future stability and growth. I took up this opportunity of my own free will because I knew that this could save the club and not least my coaching staff, writes Riise. Lothe says that he would have fully understood if Riise wanted to complete the contract. – But when he proposed this himself, it would have been irresponsible not to agree. It is sad for all parties, but it is probably the right solution for the club, says Lothe. He is not familiar with what the former Liverpool star will do next. – As far as I know, he has nothing concrete to go to. But I guess he will find something exciting relatively quickly, says Lothe. Player: – Trist Keeper Siri Ervik has played at Avaldsnes since 2022 and played 18 games in this year’s season. She thinks it’s nice of Riise to put the club before herself, as the situation has become financially. – It is primarily sad, says Ervik about Riise now quitting as head coach. Ervik admits that she was “starstruck” when she met the man with the most caps for Norway of all time. She is impressed by Riise’s time as a coach at the club. – He is an extremely caring guy. He cares a lot and gives everything he has, says Ervik. Sport manager Lothe hopes that assistant coach Roger Skulstad Johannessen will become the club’s new head coach. The club and Johannessen are now in talks about the coaching job. Keeper Ervik is positive that assistant coach Johannessen is the club’s first choice as new head coach. – Roger is very good, and we have confidence in him and the others in the coaching team, says Ervik. – Not unexpectedly Journalist Terje Flateby in Haugesund’s Avis is responsible for the newspaper’s sports coverage, and has followed Avaldsnes closely over the years. He believes the relegation to the first division and lack of financial management are bigger problems than John Arne Riise leaving the club. – I don’t feel that John Arne Riise is now retiring is a crisis. It wasn’t really unexpected, and is more of a rescue for Avaldsnes in terms of the economy, says Flateby. He believes Riise has done a good job for Avaldsnes, and points out that he managed to keep the team afloat despite difficult financial conditions. Flateby believes the club still has a big job ahead of it, despite the fact that Riise’s departure reduces the pressure on the economy somewhat. – It’s about getting a good sporting budget that allows the club to challenge the top of the first division next year, and then you have to put together a squad of players with this budget that is good enough, says Flateby and adds: – It can be difficult . I’m guessing there are players who don’t want to play for Avaldsnes in the first division and who have bigger ambitions than that.
