Spain is actively renewing its military transport capabilities, initiating the phased retirement of two long-serving aircraft. The CN235 and the C212 have been pivotal in training and support roles, especially for pilots and paratroopers. As these veterans exit the stage, a modernized fleet is set to enhance operational readiness and efficiency.

Acquisition of the Airbus C295

The Spanish Ministry of Defense formally announced the procurement of 18 Airbus C295 aircraft, which will be delivered in two separate phases over several years. This renewal plan aims at harmonizing the existing fleet, fostering operational and logistical commonality across the Air and Space Army.

Harmonizing Training and Support Functions

The acquisition will support vital instruction and support tasks within the military. The aircraft will be allocated to different schools with specific functions. The first set will serve the Military Air Transport School in Salamanca, focusing on training and transporting personnel and cargo, tasks previously undertaken by the CN235. The second group will be used at the Military Parachuting School in Murcia, responsible for both manual and automatic paratrooper drops currently performed by the C212.

Timeline for Deployment

According to Airbus, the first batch of C295 aircraft is expected to arrive between 2026 and 2028, while the second group will be delivered from 2030 to 2032. This staggered approach ensures a gradual transition, facilitating the incorporation of new aircraft into the training curricula seamlessly.

Specifications and Operational Capabilities

In transport configuration, the C295 is well-suited to fulfill the missions assigned to these military units. The aircraft boasts the capacity to carry up to 70 troops or 50 paratroopers and can operate from unpaved runways, performing cargo drops and medical evacuations. This versatility positions it as a robust tool for continuous training purposes, emphasizing flexibility over extreme performance.

Advanced Training Systems

Airbus will implement a comprehensive training and support package designed to sustain educational programs for years. This includes ground training technologies, flight simulators, and specific training management software tailored to each center’s needs. Deployment will occur in both key schools, maximizing the effectiveness of training operations.

Long-term Fleet Management

This contract extends beyond mere aircraft delivery; it includes a long-term support framework for fleet maintenance and management through 2032. The Air and Space Army will then have a robust fleet of 46 C295s, adapting to various operational configurations. Notably, Spain was the first country to adopt the C295, securing its first aircraft in 2000.

Support for National Aerospace Industry

The C295 program also bolsters Spain’s domestic aerospace sector. Design and engineering efforts are underway at Airbus facilities in Getafe, with final assembly taking place in Seville.
