Although the sun will now show its gentle face also in the south, it has so far been wet and cold in large parts of Norway in July. And it was last year too. It has disappointed many and many Norwegians sick of the weather have fled the country. The experts say we need to lower our expectations for the summer weather. – It’s a lot about luck and coincidence. And that’s how it’s always been, says meteorologist Terje Alsvik Walløe. Photo: Christian Breidlid – The weather in Norway is complex. Lower your expectations, urges the meteorologist. Climate researcher at the Meteorological Institute Hans Olav Hygen agrees. – It is ugly to say yes to it, but we are probably on to something. We forget the usual gray and changing summer. Average temperature from 1-16 July: Oslo – Blindern 2024 is the 20th coolest. Coldest in 1965. Warmest in 2018. Measurements go back to 1937. Bergen – Florida 2024 is the 29th warmest. Coldest in 1996. Warmest in 2009. Measurements go back to 1957. Værnes 2024 is the 25th warmest. Coolest in 1965. Warmest in 2014. Measurements go back to 1946. Tromsø 2024 is the 34th warmest. Coldest in 1975. Warmest in 1930 and 1972. Measurements back to 1920. Source: Meteorological Institute More satisfied in the north than in the south But one group is allowed to complain. In Austlandet, it has been particularly wet this year. Figures from the Meteorological Institute show that the summer this year, from 1 June until now, has been the third wettest summer since 1937 in Oslo. Photo: Christian Breidlid There is no systematic pattern to the summer weather in recent years. Two very wet summers in a row is completely coincidental, says Walløe. – I will be surprised if it is as wet next year. This year, Northern Norway has the weather winner in July. The summer in Tromsø is currently the fourth warmest since 1920. – This shows that the weather in Norway is complex. But the foreigners have something to learn from those in the north. The average temperature in July has been higher in the south than in the north. – Nevertheless, they in the north are more satisfied with the weather than here in the East. So it’s a bit about what you expect, says the meteorologist Nedbør in the period 1-17. July. Precipitation sum for the period 1–17 July. The precipitation for a given date must already be loaded at 8 in the morning. Precipitation has fallen during the previous 24 hours. Oslo – Blindern 2024 is the 8th wettest. Wettest in 2007. Driest in 1937. Measurements back to 1937. Bergen – Florida 2024 is the 20th wettest. Wettest in 2002. Driest in 2018. Measurements go back to 1983. Værnes 2024 is the 30th wettest. Wettest in 1973. Due to climate change, it will get wetter and warmer in the future. But the grey, dreary summer weather it has had at times in recent years is not necessarily the new normal, say the experts. Photo: Christian Breidlid – In the future we see both more precipitation and higher temperatures. You don’t see the steady rain that we have seen this year, but more extreme rain. Faster and more abrupt development, says Hygen. So a slightly higher temperature, and more torrential rain. But we won’t notice that overnight. – There are big variations from year to year, and we expect that to happen in the future as well, he adds, Hygen adds.
