In May, she will complete her qualification as a logistics operator. Extreme shortage of apprentices Norway has a crying need for apprentices. Figures from the government show that there will be a shortage of 90,000 skilled workers by 2035. The food industry alone currently lacks 2,000 apprentices. – We see that it is some of the smallest subjects that struggle the most, says Håkon Sætrang. He is the general manager of the Training Office for the public sector in Viken. The training office connects apprentices and companies. Sætrang encourages students to move if they are rejected when they apply for an apprenticeship in the local area. – It is not always possible to offer something where the students live. We have companies around the country, while the schools are often centralized. – We are very dependent on them Today, the food manufacturer Nortura lacks 70 apprentices. In the Indre Østfold department, the need is eight. If they do not get hold of new ones, in the worst case, production may be affected. – We are very dependent on us getting apprentices in. If not, it may be appropriate to hire temporary labour, says CEO Anne Marit Panengstuen in Nortura. CEO of Nortura, Anne Marit Panengstuen. It is also important that there are schools available, so that you don’t have to travel around. Recommends others to become an apprentice According to NHO, 6 out of 10 companies say that they lack competent labour. – It is important to tell young people that there are varied jobs. Some jobs are technological, while others are directly linked to our food plate, says managing director Per Hass Brubakk at NHO Mat og drikke. Apprentice Nora Cecilie Buckholm thinks it’s sad that there is such a shortage of apprentices for the job she enjoys. – It is very stupid. There is very little focus at school on working within industrial food production. She herself is enjoying herself. – It’s a different working day every day and something new is happening all the time. Compared to other apprentices, the pay is also better.
