8 February 2024 at 04:50 Record high global temperature in January The global average temperature last month was the highest ever recorded in January, according to EU researchers. January was the eighth month in a row with a new heat record for the respective month. The average temperature was 0.12 degrees above the previous January record in 2020. In Europe there were large variations. In the Nordic region it was clearly colder than normal. In the south of Europe it was far warmer than normal – something that was the case in many other places around the world. The calculations indicate that the average temperature in the world over the past twelve months was 1.52 degrees above the pre-industrial level. If this development continues, the so-called 1.5 degree target will be dashed. The main reason for the rising temperatures in the world is man-made global warming. The weather phenomenon El Niño is considered to have contributed to strong temperature jumps. (NTB)
