Algeria announced on Monday April 28 the seizure of 1.65 million Ecstasy tablets from Marseille and the arrest of nine suspects linked to a “International criminal network operating between Morocco and France”.

In a statement released by national television, the police estimated the value of this seizure at around 4 billion dinars (some 26 million euros), calling it to “Greater amount of this type of drug never seized in Africa”. The Algerian authorities have not revealed the identity of the people arrested.

The suspects were presented to the prosecutor and must respond to accusations of “international drug trafficking in a cross -border criminal group” and “money laundering”, according to the press release.

The police said that the cargo was hidden in a truck arrived by boat from the port of Marseille, where a large Algerian community lives. Other vehicles and important sums of money, supposed to come from“Illicit activities”were also seized, the police said.
