22 November 2023 at 12:46 REC Solar closes down in Norway REC Solar Norway AS closes down operations in Norway, the board has decided. The decision comes as a result of significant overproduction of high-purity silicon for solar cells worldwide, with an accompanying dramatic price drop for REC’s Norwegian-produced products, the company writes in a press release. Around 100 employees will lose their jobs. Rec Solar produces silicon for use in solar cells, and the industrial company has factories in Kristiansand and Porsgrunn. The employees were informed at general meetings this afternoon. With the exception of a few people, the employees at the businesses in Kristiansand and on Herøya will soon receive invitations to individual discussion meetings. Last year, REC initiated a six-month temporary shutdown following a tenfold increase in energy prices, and in March this year it was decided to partially start operations in Norway, with limited production
