And the rats like to eat it. Especially if you live in a big city, there are a lot of rats in the sewage system. Rats live in families, and if you get one rat, you will likely get more. Not long ago, Trond-Arnt Trondsen was called by a homeowner who had found a rat in the house. A water lock turned out to be the way the rat had used to get into the house. Photo: Trond-Arnt Trondsen / Private – When it’s cold outside, they like to go inside for warmth and a house. The rats can swim and they can come up the pipe. Trondsen was recently called to get rid of a rat in a house near Bodø. That rat had gnawed through a water lock. Although there are stricter rules for how to secure houses against rodents in new houses, Trondsen in Rentokill sees that the rat still often finds a way. Photo: Sigrid Synnøve Øberg / news – The rat can almost walk through fire to get where he wants. She is quite determined. But you can be visited by rats in even more unpleasant places than in a water lock. – The rat can come up through the toilet. I have received calls about that. How to stop the rat? But there are things you can do to avoid having the uninvited guest visit you. Trondsen has three clear pieces of advice: Check that the table covering in the house is tight Make sure you don’t have rubbish, mess and scraps lying around Do not place the woodpile next to the wall of the house – Rats live together. If you get one, it is often part of a family that can breed all year round if the conditions are right, says Trondsen in Rentokill. Photo: Trond-Arnt Trondsen / Private – Why do you have to be careful with the woodpile? – It is typical that the rat uses it to climb to get into the house, says Trondsen and adds: – Long bushes that hang over the roof are also a way for them to get in. What do you do with the rib fat? Trondsen in Rentokill says it’s simple: Throw the rib grease in the bin, not in the sink. – You can, for example, smother the fat in an empty milk carton and wait until it hardens. Then you can throw the milk carton in the bin outside. The best advice for Trondsen in Rentokill is to pour the rib fat into a milk carton and let it solidify before throwing the carton in the bin. Photo: TINE – But what do you do when the accident is over, and the rat is already in the house? – If there are rats inside the house, they often come through rubbish bins around drains and water pipes. Then it is necessary to try to seal it there, and catch with a trap, says Trondsen. When he comes to a house with rats, he first checks the cladding on the house. Even in new houses, he has seen rats find their way in. – Many people think they have a house that is safe from rodents, but that is actually not the case. Trondsen says that he has received calls from homeowners who have just moved into a new house, but the rodents have still come in: – Corners of the house are, for example, in places that are difficult to seal with mouse repellants. Photo: Sigrid Synnøve Øberg / news He adds: – If the rats are allowed to stay in a house over time, they can cause damage worth hundreds of thousands. They can cause fires and cut pipelines. Lars Skjegstad, press officer at the Norwegian Food Safety Authority, says that problems with rats often arise when the weather gets colder and there is more rainfall. – Then rodents move in to hibernate. He adds that all restaurants must take preventive measures to prevent pests from entering the premises. – If a restaurant discovers pests, they should close and immediately initiate necessary measures, says Skjegstad. Skjegstad emphasizes that it may be necessary to get professional help for this.
