The mercenary group Wagner claims to have taken the city after over 200 days of intense fighting. Putin said in a speech that those soldiers who had distinguished themselves would receive medals, reports Russian state-controlled media, according to Reuters. Ukraine has disputed that Bakhmut has fallen, after the head of the Wagner Group, Yevgeny Prigozhin, said his forces had taken control of all of Bakhmut. Prigozhin made the statement in a video published on Telegram. There he said that the Wagner group will leave the area from May 25 and hand over the city to Russian regular forces. The battle for Bakhmut has lasted eight months and is the bloodiest of the war in Ukraine. The photo published by the Wagner leader is said to show Wagner soldiers waving a Russian flag in Bakhmut on May 20.
