Here, there are only three teachers who have not gone on strike. Frida Kristina Johansen and fellow pupil Wilma Brattsti started ninth grade at the school this autumn. But since the start of school just over three weeks ago, they have only had four teaching hours. – The only subject we get to have is gym, so we miss out on a lot of general learning. We don’t get to do much, and it’s a bit difficult to do things at home too, says Frida Kristina Johansen. Worried parents The parents also despair over the consequences of the ongoing teachers’ strike. – As parents, we are so worried about the situation. Now our children have soon lost three important teaching weeks, says Rolf Arne Iversen. Rolf Arne Iversen says that they have no teaching at Hagebyen School in Harstad. Photo: Privat He has children at Hagebyen school in Harstad, where 22 out of 24 teachers have gone on strike. For almost three weeks, the pupils at the school have not received any form of teaching. – The students have neither been given a teaching plan nor access to digital platforms. We support the teachers in their struggle to improve working conditions, but we are worried about our children. Tina Bogetvedt is also worried. She is the parent of a child who was due to start secondary school this autumn, but who has still not been able to get started. – There are 133 eighth-grade students who have not been allowed to start school at all. They have lost the important start-up period, which is known to be of great importance in the transition from primary school to secondary school, says Bogetvedt. Tina Bogetvedt has children who started in eighth grade at Kvaløysletta school. Photo: Ingrid Wester Amundsen / news Rolf Arne Iversen is now asking the municipality to take action in the still equally deadlocked situation so that the pupils get a proper teaching offer. – We wonder what the school owner, i.e. the municipality, thinks about this. What risk assessment is carried out? For us as parents, this appears to be a recipe for further drop-out at school. – It is not with a light heart that we go on strike County leader of the Education Association in Troms and Finnmark, Thomas Nordgård, says the teachers share the parents’ concern. – It is not with a light heart that we strike. There is a lump in the stomach for the students, both academically and socially. He says they want the strike to end as soon as possible so that the teachers can teach the students again. – But for that to happen, KS must come to meet us, and there has been no particular movement from KS, and that is very regrettable, he says and adds; – I would like local school authorities to put much clearer pressure on KS to come to a solution. There has been deafening silence from the political side. The county leader of the Education Association in Troms and Finnmark, Thomas Nordgård, says he has great understanding of the frustration among students and parents. Photo: Uddanningsforbundet – The teachers’ choice Tom Mikalsen, regional director of the Municipal Sector Organization (KS) Northern Norway, writes in an e-mail to news that it is the teachers’ organizations’ choice to strike, and that then they must take responsibility for the students being affected . – KS and the municipalities as school owners will say that it is very regrettable that children and young people are affected by strikes and receive a greatly reduced teaching offer at the start of the school year. The strike action by the teachers’ organizations means that students at some schools receive less tuition than students at other schools, writes Mikalsen. He emphasizes that KS contributes actively to the ongoing dialogue between the parties through the Riksmekleren. – Now we have to see how long the strike lasts, and then the school owner will consider introducing measures to compensate for lost lessons for students affected by the strike.
