Probably the first to climb Tromma on Kvaløya – news Troms and Finnmark

– After so much work up front, it was an insane, euphoric feeling, says Vetle Sevild. Early in the morning on Sunday 23 June, Sofie Nordvik, Vetle Sevild and Sigurd Norderval stood at the top of Tromma. Morning sun at the top. Photo: Vetle Sevild / Private The three climbers are probably the first to ever climb this wall, which rises 400 meters above sea level, northwest of Kvaløya. They succeeded on the second attempt. A week before, Sevild, Norderval and Finn Hovem attempted the same feat. That time, they had to give themselves around ten hours to the experiment. Sigurd Norderval, Sofie Nordvik and Vetle Sevild are probably the first to climb the entire Tromma rock face on Kvaløya. Cleaned the mountain Vetle Sevild did a thorough preparatory work. He filmed the mountain side with a drone, so that they could study the terrain they had to climb in. – It was absolutely necessary for us to find the line we were climbing, says friend Sigurd. Sevild also climbed down from the top to check the route beforehand, and cleaned parts that were overgrown. On June 22, they were ready for attempt number two. Then we got to the place where we had to try to commute into the second ditch. At first Sofie tried, but she just couldn’t reach. – Then I thought that now we have to turn around again. But Vetle gave it a heroic attempt, and just managed it, says Norderval. Sigurd on his way around the corner Photo: Sofie Nordvik / Privat Duppet in the rock wall He says that there is a large mountain shelf with grass about in the middle of the rock walls. There, the trio took a break of three quarters of an hour, where they ate, drank and even had a little nap. Just before 06:00, a day after it started, they were at the top. Sigurd sleeps on a mountain ledge at 05:00 in the morning. Photo: Vetle Sevild / Private – We think this is the first ascent, so we were very proud and satisfied to have climbed well. It was such a great experience to share this with two really good climbers, who are also two good friends, says Sigurd Norderval. Up at the top, the climbers took a bath in a cold mountain lake, before trudging down. – It was incredibly nice to be able to cool down a bit. It was Vetle Sevild’s dentist, a former climber, who tipped him off about Tromma. He had been there in the 90s, but had to give up halfway up the wall. Photo: Martin Andersen / Private – We also found traces of others until about midway. Five or six anchors remained. But from there onwards there were no traces of people, says Sevild. Therefore, he is quite convinced that he and his friends are first-time climbers. – After all, we have a number of contacts in the climbing community that we have consulted with in advance. We have heard that there were some attempts in the 90s and some in the 2000s. We found several turning points on the way up which indicate that there have been people there, says Norderval. Mountaineer Cecilie Skog praises young people with a sense of adventure. Photo: Christine Heim / To the top of Norway – Have fun with adventure news has shown the photos from the Tromma climb to Cecilie Skog, who is a mountaineer herself. She does not know this wall on Kvaløya, and therefore cannot comment on the performance itself. But a day in the rock wall says something about the fact that this is not something that everyone does. – It’s fun that there are young people with a sense of adventure out there, with lots of curiosity and motivation to explore new lines, she says. Photo: Vetle Sevild / Private Merrick Mordal is a mountain climber and ski guide in Tromsø. She is impressed by the three climbers. – It is incredibly cool what they have done. They had a good plan and it’s quite crazy that it hasn’t been until now that someone has managed to reach the top, she says. Now she has really wanted to try her hand at Tromma herself, and perhaps find some new lines. – I have two weeks off this summer, and then I will ask Sofie if she will join, says Mordal.
